Cold Air Intakes

I have a BBK right now on mine. I wish I would of known more when I first got it because I would of either gotten a JLT or just a K&N filter. My question is would I benefit at all to sell my BBK and get the JLT? Some things I like about the JLT is that it's plastic so less heat absorbtion, it's a 4"tube compared to just 3 1/4 of the BBK. And also you can order the JLT in custom colors, which I would get white to spice up under the hood. So is it stupid to do or just stick with what I gots.

Well from what I've heard about heat...It doesn't matter a whole lot because the air is not in the intake long enough to get heated up...so it's more for looks then anything...

Mug11 12-31-2005 02:48 PM

get the JLT

whitethunder46 12-31-2005 02:50 PM

But I already have a BBK, is a JLT that much better?

4.6 Love 12-31-2005 02:57 PM

CAI's are crap...

MattJ 12-31-2005 02:57 PM

keep what youve got. you arent going to notice anything different. our GTs barely see any difference between a nice filter to a full cold air unit. dont waste your money...

csledd 12-31-2005 02:58 PM

I agree with matt

whitethunder46 12-31-2005 03:06 PM

Thanks guys, thats all I was wandering.

pimpmustangGT 01-01-2006 12:36 AM

thats not true... the stock tube is a pos... but a cai isnt any good unless it goes down into your fender well a good ways...and has that plate to close it off... u wanna make a differnce with a stock pipe - leave the stock filter one and remover the air filter housing - its the killer.. but anyway an aluminum cai that goes into the fender well makes an incredible differnce!

r3dn3ck 01-01-2006 09:41 AM

seen dozens and dozens of dyno runs with CAI's... 4V engines gain a few. 2V don't. Unless you have supercharger or turbo they're never worth the money for performance. They make the air hotter, introduce all kinds of sudden bends and are usually aerodynamically inefficient.

I know of 1 guy whose combo isn't very radical that's making over 300rwhp and is using the stock intake tract down to the rubber snorkel. CAI's don't work for 2V guys.

Boon44 01-01-2006 11:00 AM

I still got the JLT RAI (painted true blue to match the car) for the boy's stang for Christmas.....might gain some HP...might not.....but it still will look cool as hell.... :pepper:

whitethunder46 01-01-2006 02:03 PM

yea, i wouldnt mind getting the JLT to add some dress up under the hood, I've mentioned before my goal is to make it a show quality car

01_OXFORD_SVT 01-02-2006 10:26 AM

I gained 20 DYNO PROVEN hp at the TIRES with a JLT CAI.. i wouldnt buy anything less EVER!! P.S. you can feel it too, seriously... :beerchug:

ponyexpress96 01-02-2006 07:13 PM

Im looking for a CAI does JLT have a website?

whitethunder46 01-02-2006 08:24 PM

http://www.jlttruecoldair.com/

blownstang 01-02-2006 08:27 PM

JLT = the win ;)

on an otherwise stock engine? LIAR! atleast, misinformed. There is no possible way you'd get 20 rwhp from a cai. maybe 10 CRANK 10 hp max. On a s/c'ed engine, yes...stock...no. Widening the intake only helps so much. there's only so much air u can cram without a s/c

Boon44 01-02-2006 09:23 PM

The man that owns JLT told me personally that a pretty much stock GT is going to gain 10-12 HP. And that dyno after dyno after dyno the RAI and CAI yielded the same basic increases in performance.

ponyexpress96 01-03-2006 02:45 PM

thanks lighting

Ya? Well so does K&N. Real world numbers arent close to that. Intakes are pretty much worthless on a bolt on 2v. You are better off buying a high-flowing filter and remove your air silencer for 75% cheaper than the full intake unit.

madmatt 01-03-2006 04:32 PM

Hell, I wish I had just bought a replacement paper filter. 3 bucks and does the same that a K&N does. Intakes dont do crap on our cars, and the ones that go in the fender are even worse because they screw with your a/f ratio, which is a bad thing.

ponyexpress96 01-03-2006 07:38 PM

So it is not really worth the 170.00 dollars it would cost?? for my car

MattJ 01-03-2006 08:21 PM

Give me the money and ill buy and install a nice filter for you, and youll have close to the same results.

Maybe so.....but I got money to burn!..... :punk:

Even if there is no performance gain, it will definitely look nice.

pimpmustangGT 01-03-2006 11:38 PM

10-15hp can be expected from a good cai - at the crank

MjCorn23 01-04-2006 11:23 AM

It is true with a CAI you are never really going to notice the gains or really get much of gains. Unless you put it on a 03-04 Cobra then you would see some nice numbers. The only reason that is though is because it has a poweradder and is already being forced more air.

Islander03GT 01-04-2006 01:00 PM

Those of you claiming 20 Dyno Proven hp on the JLT...

is that your own dyno proven test, or just the mfg's claim?

Stock intake + K&N filter is the best imo.

RCTrucker7 01-05-2006 09:37 AM

As I've said in other threads, I know jack about working on/modding/upgrading/etc cars. That's why there's mechanics and such, for people just like me. But, I noticed in this thread that the majority say either CAI's aren't worth it and/or that they don't do what others in the thread claim they do; "Giving 20HP etc, etc". If that's true, and I honestly don't know one way or the other, then why is Mustang Tuning itself, selling one claiming that same thing?

The Steeda High Velocity Cold Air Kit for your 05 Mustang GT
To maximize the benefit of all the additional airflow, the computer must be re flashed (Steeda uses the SCT Xcalibrator for this purpose). With the kit installed and the computer re calibrated, Steeda found 26.7 ponies at the rear wheels, and 22 additional ft/lbs of torque. Those are substantial gains, verified on the Steeda Dyno.

r3dn3ck 01-05-2006 10:02 AM

05's can see 20+ rwhp gains from a tune and a CAI. That's peculiar to 05+ GT's.

96-98 can see 1-3 reasonably.
99-04 would be lucky to see 1-5

People are stupid, and ignorant and not likely to change. Why not lie to them and make them think because it's possible to gain 20hp on a stock GT with a CAI. Then they'll send you 300 bucks at a shot and you'll be rich and they'll be still stupid.

My default belief is that everything Steeda says is a flat out lie. If it's not an out and out lie it's a spin, distortion, obfuscation, embellishment, or half-truth. When you see performance gains in writing, ignore them. they're uniformly over-optimistic.

RCTrucker7 01-05-2006 10:37 AM

Any idea what makes the '05 GT's so "special"?
