Rear End Change

I was going to change the gears in my 00 GT automatic. I was thinking 3.73 with master bearing kit. Has anyone bought these or reccomened a different gear ratio keeping in mind i still want to drive it on the highway and such. I have heard rumors that 4.10 gears are bad going 80 or over? Any help about selection or heads up on installs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I drive 4.10's on my 2001 auto.......you shouldnt be going 80 mph in the first place but basically I rev at 3,000 rpms at about 80 mph. As long as you dont run on it too hard it's not bad but if your scared you can go to 3.73....but you'll get the most out of gears going 4.10's. Go FFRP or Motive if your on a budget both are basically the same. Raetech and motive both make a good Master Bearing kit. Everything you need for a good price is on MT. And look at about $200-300 for a install anymore than that is a rip. But make sure it's someone you trust with your car. Check out the MT Official Gear Thread for all info you can need.

Edit: Forgot to mention you need to get your speedo recalibrated by either a Speed Cal or a Tune. Also I have a tune for my car it will improve your shifts and in my opinion is very worthwhile for a auto. Anyone else with a tune on their auto will most likely agree.

4.10's especially with an auto are a great choice. If it were me, I would go with 4.30's since it is an auto and 4.10's for a 5 speed.

If you are torn between the 2, they DO make 3.90s which I have in my 01 gt. Im 100% glad I went with 3.90s.

Yea, get teh 3.90s if you are that worried about it. I wish I had gone higher than my 3.73's and I have a five speed, so definately go higher since you drive an automatic.

Thanks for the help everyone. I just had a follow up questions. Why can automatics take a higher gear than manual trans? I probably will consider the 3.9 if they will be better for if i am on the highway or somewhere? Thanks!

Dont fear the gear. I've got 4.10's in my automatic 03. The gas mileage difference is not that big. I get maybe 10 miles fewer out of a tank, and if I drove it more conservatively it wouldn't make a difference.
