4.6 turbos?

i was wondering about turbocharging the 4.6 and had a few questions? anyone here even running a turbo currently? how do you like it? also, wouldn't a V-8 stang require a twin turbo kit to do it right? i think a single would defeat the purpose of true dual exhaust, wouldn't you have to Y the pipes together to make it work? what about spooling up, i think 2 smaller sized turbos would spool much quicker than a large single. my thoughts are if we already have mad torque which, my import buddys drool at, why not add top end power too? any thoughts would be great for a turbo-illiterate?

www.boostang.com - single turboed his car and did an awsome job!
www.hpperformance.com - twin turbo kits, pricey but makes alot of hp, you also need a built engine to run one

ColoradoStang 09-28-2005 01:26 PM

anything else?

Lightning247 09-28-2005 02:10 PM

I'll go ahead and say it...If anyone with a 4.6 is considering a turbo it's going to cost 15k minimum to do it correctly.

Badfish 09-28-2005 02:24 PM

boostang only spent like 7 k for everything regarding the turbo including istall, 15k for twin turbos and a build motor mabey...but not for a single

you dont have to have a built engine to run a hp twin turbo setup i talked to the guy two days ago and he said under 11 psi is great on stock or slightly modded engines peace

and the kit only cost 6395 with h pipe full suspension chip BOVs wastegates k members and control arms

why even get a turbo if it costs so much more than a sc and even has lag? Sure TT are awesome hp, but is it really worth it???

zincougt 09-28-2005 08:09 PM

turbos are more efficient than superchargers.... only advantage i can see on a street stang

StangGT804 09-28-2005 08:20 PM

Hellion has turbo kits that are about 6 or 7g's! Comes with everything you need! Go single!

venom 09-28-2005 08:42 PM

The worst thing to happen is that you spend 7-9k on a kit to have you engine fail and you have to spend another 3-5k to get it to run again. With the money you spend on a turbo you could rebuild your engine and get a SC. I have to agree with Lightning247.

ColoradoStang 09-28-2005 09:06 PM

wow! all the parts are priced so cheap, why soo much to get it "right"? what even is a "correct" setup?

also, a turbo'd stang would be much more unique than a s/c stang, thats kinda why i was checking them out, to exhaust my possibilites and be unique with my ride :D

a D-1sc is looking better and better :D

I dont have his # cause iam at work. He's done most of the work on my car, awesome guy! but Iam sure you can find it in the phone book under speedshops?

tell him Will sent you ;)

It can be misleading about the price of turbo kits and Supercharger kits. I'm not saying that these cars, even the ones buying off the shelf Turbo kits aren't "quick." But what has to be understood is there is a dichotomy between the requirements for a low 12/high 11sec 500hp Stock Shortblock street driven car | To a serious 600+rwhp 8/9/10 sec street/strip car. The difference is in the timeslips, and in the quality and longevity of the build. The Big Boys spend well over 15k to get everything done correctly. It takes serious money to play this game, especially with our Modular motors.

To Make Power and put it to the ground quickly:

Forged (Billet) Shortblock
Billet oil pump gears
Billet trigger wheel
Fuel system-Larger feed and return lines, regulator, sumped tank, Pump, injectors
Lightweight wheels
Purpose Tires
Ignition System upgrades
Standalone Fuel management -or- dozens of hours of proper tuning.
Torque Arm/Panhard bar setup -or- Adj. Upper/lower control arms
Built 8.8 rear (this might not even hold up under severe 1,000rwhp apps)
Axles
Upgraded Brakes (Probably the most overlooked and most important component for ensuring safety)
Chassis stiffening upgrades (Full Length Cross braced subframes and/or Cage)
Proper Shocks/struts Springs -or- coilover setup
The list continues...

It's as the old adage goes....

"If you have to ask how much you don't have enough"

It's nice to dream though!

To add to that, your turbo setup will run but for how long on stock block. Take it from me as Im there right now but instead of adding a power adder to a wimpy motor its best to start with the motor work your way from there unless you have an 03-04 cobra block .

04gtfreak 09-29-2005 04:47 PM

hp perfomance says stock block will handle 9 psi daily i think i posted higher last time but i talked to him again and thats what he told me "it will be fine" direct quote the kit i have looked at IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY im not going to be draging this car, its for somewhat illegal racing if you will, so on the street this is the best way to go in my opinion and also i know a guy that ran an 8 flat in 1/4 mile with twin turbo so talk all the **** you want about lag and all but 8 flat speaks for itself

oohsoobad2 09-30-2005 03:11 PM

Turbo lag is a thing of the past. What it really boils down to is that it takes horsepower to drive a supercharger, a turbocharger is spooled of the exhaust so that makes it 'free' power. A turbo will ALWAYS make more power than a supercharger.

I've seen N/A cobra motors with a tranny for 6K buy that and a Kenne Bell and you got one hell of a car. It'll cost about 10k but what the hell. Or you could probably run 8-11psi and tune the crap out of it (SAFETY FIRST) and you'd have a great running stang.

Aviator 4V 4.6's are also great choices. Ive seen them used for around $2K.
