PI heads for 96-98

Where is the best and/or cheapest place to get the 99+ PI (romeo) heads? I would need the heads and intake. If I find them cheap, I would drop some more cash for a hot street cam and maybe have the intake runners polished.

Well, you have two or three options. Some places actually sell a complete kit with everything from gaskets, bolts, etc. OR you could find a pair in the classifieds section on most of the mustang specific websites. They are always some out there for sale, just takes some looking. The only disadvantage to this is the heads arent brand new, and it may take some time to piece a whole kit together. If you buy used ones, go see Randy Stincholmb over at modulardepot.com in the parts section. He sells a headswap kit with the stuff youll need. He knows exactly what you need, so any questions could be presented to him as well. Good luck, it will make your car SOOO much faster too. Also, save the extra money and get some new cams, like VT stage ones or twos.

Another option is too get a complete 99+ GT engine and just swap it in. It cost about the same and probably be easier to do. Another option is the 02+ Explorer 4.6 its the same as a GT engine but all aluminum.

So all GT mustangs in the years 99-04 have the heads? also If I get the heads and I'm looking for cams, I would need to buy cams for a 99+ stang right? And last question, has anyone swaped the crappy plastic intake from the gt 4.6 with a BULLIT intake? Just curious, and thanks for the help.

madmatt 08-29-2005 05:35 PM

Yes, any heads from 99-04, but Id suggest getting 01-04 heads as the cams are bolted onto the cam gears instead of pressed on, just makes it easy to switch out cams. Also, the lower mileage doesnt hurt. About the bullitt intake, Id say leave the stock plastic one on unless you are planning on a big shot of nitrous or really high boost. Otherwise, youll see just as much of a gain with a tb/plenum combo for the most part. Also, the whole bullitt swap is like 2k almost. Just food for thought.

Good advice, the Bullitt intake is a nice upgrade but not reallty worth it for a near stock n/a motor,

Check out http://car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi there are quite a few Explorer engines avaiable in your state. They make the same HP as the GT engine but weigh in about 90 lbs less.

The reason I asked about the bullit intake is because I will be running a street/strip cam and could be using the extra flow. Also there is a guy who has a totalled bullit down the road from me, who will practically give me the intake, but I believe there would be many odds and ends to tie up to swap it on. In the end I will boost, but it will be with a Kenny Bell so the intake manifold is no longer needed.

Any ideas for a good cam, Im thinkin middle of the road. Not just street and not all drag...

Take it off his hands if its cheap, but get EVERYTHING you need, alt. fuel rails, everything. Vt Stage one cam would probably suit you best. OR if a blower is in the somewhat near future, just go ahead and get the stage 2 blower cam from VT, but you have to get new valve springs.

OFFdutyHERO 08-31-2005 02:54 PM

How will my engine "act" with the new stage 2 cams? I concerned about things like Idle rpm, cruising rpm, and gas mileage. And a noob question, What company is VT??

Next... when doin the swap. Other than the heads, cams, cam gears, intake manifold, and the gaskets, what all else do I need?

madmatt 08-31-2005 03:22 PM

www.vtengines.com Your car will have a more radical idle, and youll need a tune before it will idle well with those cams. Gas mileage shouldnt be a problem, unless you keep your foot in it. Cruising rpm wont change. Hmm, id make sure the flowtech headers will fit on the new heads, other than that, I think you are covered as long as you plan on getting a tune.

about the intke and heads jegs has them but the heads are like 450 bucks and they also have the kit for the swap because i am looking to do the same thing to my car what cam would you guys suggest me get i am gona shop around some due to funds

madmatt 09-02-2005 02:58 PM

Honestly, Id suggest nothing other than VT's cams. The other cams have all had piston to valve contact problems and VT makes great power. Also, youll have to decide if you want stage one or two, but for an everyday, or even sometimes raced car, the stage ones are plenty.

Joel's98GT 09-03-2005 01:33 PM

maddmatt is right on. If you are still looking for a PI swap kit for a reasonable price, try http://www.parkwayperformance.com/2vheadswap.asp

with this kit it has bolt on cam gears as well, which make swapping in aftermarket cams ALOT easier, also rember that PI cams are a upgrade over your stockers as well. VTengines is where I would go for cams, if you want ported heads, which will help even more than just cams alone, VT can do that too, or Fox-lake is a great ford heads shop too.

if you are dead set on a beter intake, the p-51 from fox lake is pricey but the fastest NA modular 4.6L went 10's with it, so it's been proven to work with the right combonation.

oohsoobad2 09-03-2005 02:39 PM

VT seems to be where its at for 2V's. One of the recent issues of had a 2V N/A shootout and more than half of the cars, including the fastest, ran Stage 2 VT cams.

Another note on the P51 intake, I know it may just be one case, but Ive seen a car that went slower after the intake. Dont know why, but if it were me, id stick to just an accufab elbow and throttle body.

They most likely put it on a stock or very lightly modded engine. The stock workhorses cant handle the extra air well. Once a power adder is added, that is when the extra flow is used.

ponyexpress96 09-09-2005 02:50 PM

with the VT stage one cam what all tuning will i need to have done and what about the 4:10 gears or are the 3:55 s better also where can i get the speed calibrator or what ever i need for the gear change and how how much
