Hi-Po clutch

Would it be a good idea to get a performance clutch on a stock 5psd? i have heard it will engage liek nobody's business but it will wear out the actually tranny....i want to be able to launch a li'l better at the track without worrying about breaking my tranny. ;)

Don't worry about getting a heavy duty clutch unless you're going to making heavy duty power. ;) If you just want something to tear up the streets and occasionally track, I'd look into the Spec Stage 1 or 2 for your car. Even then, I wouldn't worry about changing it until your stocker is going out. If you do use the Spec, don't use the TO bearing that comes with it. Other than that, it is a very good clutch.

What are the symptoms of a clutch thats about to go out? I want to know for future reference. ;)

Well, it will slip, and there is a good test to see if your clutch is slipping, put it in 5th gear at about 30mph and floor it, if the car accelerates, you are ok, but if only the RPM's rise, then its slipping.

Spec clutches are very good. I have a friend that runs low 10's on a stage3.

Yes what he said, but it can happen in any gear.I might add once you find out the clutch is slipping,do something right away, you don't have many slips left. Then you'll be Found On the Road Dead. ;)

SPEC?????? gotta be KIDDING ME!!!!!! I had a SPEC stage 1 and the thing chattered like a cold dog on crack. damn, I tell u from experience. I had the STAGE 1 spec and it chattered badly...my clutch pedal vibrated....and the Spec throw out bearing is a piece of crapola!

So....I switched to the Centerforce Dual Friction clutch (which is indeed expensive...about $340. but worth every dollar) like 2 months after having SPEC, and all my problems went away. Centerfoce grabs like a child grabbing on to her mommy after getting scared by suttin.

OH and I dont know about all this "Hi performance clutch will damage your tranny if your car is fairly stock" stuff...but right now my car is stock besides what I have in my Signature...and my tranny is just FINE after like um 4,000 miles of track running and daily driving.

But hey..it is possible that if u do decide the SPEC route it could work out just fine for you....Its A HIT or MISS type deal..I know of others hat had similar problems with that clutch online and personally.

About how much should a clutch install cost on my car? I have Hooker LT headers, but you are supposed to be able to do it without having to loosen them, but it still may make it a harder job. What do you guys think.

What about a King Cobra clutch..i have money to spend it's no biggie..i have heard good things about the King Cobra. ;)

The King Cobra is a POS. I have that in mine now, but not for long. It's basicaly a stock clutch with a neat name.

NoKturnaL 12-11-2004 11:40 AM

hey...forget the King Cobra!
I recommend either Centerforce, McCleod, Ram, or clutches. heh

I was about to have a King Cobra clutch from MT installed but i did not know at the time that The king Cobra CLutch did not FIT my car. The KC clutch is 10.5" and only 11" clutches fit my car lol I was pissssed.
