Which bearing kit?
Be advised bearing kits come 2 ways - with and without wheel bearings. If your car has high mileage (or you're paranoid and unlucky like me) you want the wheel bearings too.

i thought that the bearing kit came with bearings, and that the installation kit was the same as the bearing kit just without the bearings...

Yes a speedo recal is required. I got a FRPP one. It was only $81 bucks, but I do work at a ford dealer. Once they get the rear end apart they may say you need to replace your carrier berrings, I had to. About 90 bucks for them, and good peace of mind.

2 different kinds of bearing kits
There are 2 different bearing kits. One has all the bearings, PLUS the wheel bearings - it usually costs over $120. Then there is the bearing kit that has all the bearings you need to do the swap, WITHOUT the wheel bearings, that costs around $90.

yeah, well the one they sell on here is $90, so im guessing this is the one without the wheel bearings? will this be fine to buy?
|
also, while im installing the gears, do you guys think its worth it to throw a shift kit in as well...if so what kind?? i have a 97 gt, auto

Bearings
Just went and eyeballed the kit - must admit I'm not sure if it includes wheel bearings or not, but doesn't appear to. If you need new wheel bearings, your installer will tell you.
As for a shift kit, I don't have an aod, but everybody I know really notices the difference once you get one. If you have the money (good shift kits are not cheap - shop around), its a good investment. If you're short the cash, you can consider a tuner (SCT or Diablo - I recommend the SCT) instead of a speedo recalibrator. This will give you a tool to reset your speedo and shift points/firmness, as well as all the tune and error code reading capabilities they have. tripleblack |
More gear threads!

while on the topic of shift kits, does anybody else have a 97 gt auto (aod i believe) with a shift kit installed?? Ive been looking for one and can't seem to find any...
|
okay i think i might have found one by b&m... http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...82&prmenbr=361 ...let[/url] me know if that will work with my car, im not good with codes like they give
remember i have a 1997 mustang gt auto thanks |
Ive heard to stay away from the shift kits out there, and go with a Jerry Mod. I think you can find some info at www.tccoa.com Check that out first, its cheap and easy from what I hear.
