you appear to not know shit....

so,

yes, it'll fit
the tranny will bolt right up. clutch is another story. You need a new flywheel to make your spec clutch work.

31 spline outers and 28 spline inners on 01' cobra IRS. You don't need to even think about the rear end. You said you "know" this much... you don't. Go read or ask.

As a matter of fact... search for "cobra swap" and learn at least the basics before you post hideously bad and ignorant statements like the ones above.

MUDFIST 07-18-2010 12:12 PM

Ouch

Yes sir...sorry..........Ive owned several 5.0 mustangs and am new to the modular world. And as a matter of fact, superchargers as well. Im sorry but my job is very demanding and i dont have as much time as id like to sit here all day and night searching for previous post. The navy keeps me hopping.I appreciate the info ,but could really do without the condesending tone, ive made no harsh remarks or belittled anyone one here.I was told if you dont ask questions youll never know. I wish i had the time to know everything , but i have such a full plate. Sorry if i bothered you with my ignorant questions.

TNell 07-18-2010 12:47 PM

don't worry about r3d...

he's seems to be very knowledgeable but very short on patience and tact

he'll be able to help with your questions but you'll have to endure the unnecessary sarcasm

r3dn3ck 07-19-2010 07:28 AM

I wasn't being sarcastic... I was telling you how to help yourself before you waste a lot of my time and other peoples time asking questions that have been worded so as to be impossible to answer in a manner approaching something that could be called correct. (I'll try and be nicer... ready? Here we go:)

One quick glance through wiki-frikin-pedia at their wonderful pages regarding modular and triton engines would have answered a lot of questions for you and have helped you ask sane questions of us.
(No... that still came off kinda snarky. Sorry... that came from my unconcerned annoyance interface. Gimme one more try...)

If you think I was being condescending, you're probably right and with good cause. Mostly because the rest of us with our insanely busy lives have managed to cobble together some basis of knowledge before making radical decisions. I am however giving you advice. It's good advice. Follow it and you'll thank me later. If I come off as abrasive... meh you'll learn. I'm more, "matter of fact" than mean. If your feelings get hurt, get better feelings.
(No... that was pretty sarcastic. Definitely from the generalized sarcasm interface. <digs around in his head for a second> Aha, found it. My compassionate and friendly interface)

I realize you're quite busy and I understand the service gives precious little time for wiggling around on the interwebz and even complicates it in many ways but this is a case where you absolutely need to build a relatively small basis of knowledge so that you don't cost yourself thousands of needless dollars and endless frustration, or worse... a ride you can't drive.

Here's a few tips...

OHC engines are no different than pushrod engines. They work the same way. It's only the cam setup that's really different and it's not terribly different. Besides you're probably not going to be dicking with them so it's irrelevant right.

All modular bits are portable, ie you can take the heads off a 4v 4.6 and put them on the bottom end from a 2v 5.4 if you want. They're all made on common tooling (that's what's modular, not the engine) so most dimensions and nearly all datum points are the same. The point is, you can generally assume that if it bolted up to one 4.6/5.4 it'll probably be able to bolt to any other. This counts for trannies too (no Tnell, not the guys who get their cocks turned inside out and take hormones to grow boobs, I'm talking about transmissions.)

The most ex(p|t)ensive complications to an engine swap is always intake manifold selection (if needed) followed by exhaust setup and clutch. Wiring harnesses are easily adapted from one motor to the next unless you're adding cylinders. Fuel systems for any particular model (except 03/04 cobra and 05+ shelby's) are usually pretty close to the limit of their capacity with the stock power level. Point in fact, you can usually get away without dealing with much on any of those fronts if you get a nice complete motor and you stay in the same displacement family (4.6 to 4.6, etc...). Fuel system.. well not so much. You're pretty much going to need to do something about the fuel system no matter how you go 4v. It's going to cost between 100 and 2000 bucks. See why I bitched about your question.

You're talking about an 03 cobra motor and then in the same breath talking about an 01 cobra motor. They're not even on the same planet as far as power or fuel system requirements. You've basically told us you're wanting to go to a 4v but you haven't made the connection between the blower and it being a whole different level of car and cost. That's a pretty big bug in the plans and I think you need to spend the thinking chair time to decide what you want from the car before you go any further.

See... my crankiness comes from people trying to spend an asston of money and frustration for nothing and asking my advice on how. Stop Think Observe Plan. Stop making plans till you have a mission. Think about what you want from the car, that goal is your mission. Observe, your funding capabilities and time/patience constraints and tell the people you want answers from the details of the Stop and Think subroutines. Plan a strategy with your mentors to get you as close to your objective as you can get with the resources and constraints you have in play. Execute on that plan.

r3dn3ck 07-19-2010 07:39 AM

There, was that nicer. Jeez.. you'd think I told him to fuck off or something. Note to self, don't tell someone to read a little... they get all miffed.

it's all in the delivery which despite your other talents you still frikin-suck at

just trying to put in a way you might understand

you'd be a much better contributor to this board and the mustang community in general if your people skills equalled your car skills

It's too bad r3d probably contributes more to this board than anyone else. Most of which is actually related to fixing problems and such and being mustang related. He's not the only one that gets a little irritated when someone doesn't do a quick search before posting something. MUDFIST's thread wasn't exactly something thats uncommon and could be googled in seconds.

Ok... start by stopping. We'll get you a plan but you gotta stop thinking about it and let us help you.

First just answer these simple questions (please answer directly and briefly):

How much HP do you want at the tires (quarter mile time goals work as well)?
How much can you honestly say you'll dump into the project before you get mad and quit?
What part of the world are you stationed in?
Are you happy with the handling?
Are you happy with the braking?
Are you happy with the seating?

One of the first things to do is pull off that damned timing adjuster and sell it on ebay. Adjusting global spark was retarded when they built that thing and it's even less sensible now. Your ECU is way way better at messing with the timing than a movable pointer. It's just fluff you don't need and it's holding onto money you can use. If your BBK cold air kit is a fenderwell kit, ditch it. BBK means bent, broken and kinked. If you need another CAI to replace it I'll sell you my spare underhood kit for 30 bucks + shipping. You can get that out of selling your BBK piece. Remember, that's only necessary if it's a fenderwell kit.

Start looking into SCT handhelds. Find out what their hottest dealie that will work with your car is and get one or start saving up for it. (NOt sure about what's current... x3 or the sct live or whatever, call them and ask. Don't surf the web for this answer.) Report back with what you find out.

We'll get further with the motor when you have a goal and a budget.

great post, thanks on behalf of all who may benefit from your expertise.

it makes the entire forum more enjoyable when everyone can get along. that's not to say that tough love isn't appropriate occasionally as long as there's at least a little love and it's not too awfully tough.:)
