Underdrive Pulleys...
 

Alright I have a buddy who mostly works on foreign cars or whatever. He is telling me that if I get pulleys I'm going to need to get my crank and all that good stuff rebalanced... I have never ever done anything like this so I'm not sure about it... Is this true???

I've heard horror stories of UDPs causing mis-balanced cranks, but have never seen it happen in person. I have seen guys go through alternators like crazy because of UDPs though. Other than that no issue.

All you have to do is swap the pulleys out thats it. They will not do anything bad other then make the a/c slightly less cold. I have had them on for years and even here in hot ass Florida my a/c is fine. Nothing to worry about.

Spike you always have the most knowledge on everything it seems.... You should be a mechanic.... in fact come out to oklahoma and put some of this stuff on my stang... Appreciate the info though...

I just love messing with cars and have been since I was 10 when I first changed oil in my dads truck. I will never work as a mechanic, no offense to anyone who does it, but I'm going to Law School. Cars are just a hobby of mine.

the only problems i've heard of with underdrive pulleys is you won't be able to run big wattage amps for stereos. and cheap off brands ones might not be well balanced. just stay name brand and you should be good. i'm picking up a Steeda shortly myself.

getting UDP isn't that much of a gain, the last time I checked..I could be wrong too

I dont know the difference i picked up, but i could feel the car rev faster. Every little bit counts.

if that... I've never seen more than 6 and that was all the way at the top. Under 3500 rpm there are no gains whatsoever. It's not a problem if you get quality parts and stop listening to stupid ass ricers that think a FWD car with a wing on the back is a good idea. Just steer clear of Granatelli/GMS parts and you should be ok. Steeda has a really nice set.

I used to work on Mustangs full time and the best 4.6 pulley sets are from Steeda. They are SFI approved and Steeda is the only aftermarket manufacturer to make pulleys and through a technology transfer program with Ford. Lifetime warranty too. Since '95 and the arrival of the 130 amp alternator in the Mustangs, the factory alternator pulley has been the same diameter as an underdrive pulley for the old 75 amp unit. That's why there isn't one in the kits most of the time. And about running huge amps, the stock alternators weren't meant for that anyway. That's why there are capacitors. No, it is not true that you have to do over a thousand dollars worth of engine R+R and machine work just to put on a $200 set of pulleys. That's why they're called bolt ons. Buy the Steeda ones and don't worry about it.
