I have 96gt and i wanna put my cooling fan on a switch. Can someone tell me how to do it.

Its pretty simple to add in a switch so you can toss it onto high speed such as when your at the track. Just be careful cause you can drain the battery super fast doing this. Then the next thing you know your stuck in the staging lanes at the drag strip and can't move. Ask me how I know this lol.

ive been wanting to throw a switch in my car just for the hell of it. what benefits and flaws does it have to put your fan on a switch?

Its good for manually cooling it down when needed. The way I listed it keeps it just like factory only you can flip it onto high speed when needed.

so if im just dirving and the switch is off the fan will still come on when it needs too ?

also do you think you can provide a picture of where we tie in the line if its not too inconvenient. and wont the alternator charge the battery while its running or is the fan too taxing on both the alternator and the battery for it?

pin 46 on the PCM. It's labelled pretty clearly. Use a magnifying glass and pull the wire harness from the ECU and you'll see the pin numbers on the red side. Use a vampire tap and clip it on to the wire that goes where you need it to be going. Enjoy.

Yes the alternator will charge the battery but the radiator fan is a VERY high draw device and can whittle through a standard car battery in no time, especially with the engine singing at full tilt and the radio going.

as you can tell im not too good with electrical, you tie into the positive lead and just run from the switch to any ground or the ground on the lead?

Yes with the switch off the fan will work just like stock. When you flip the switch it will complete the ground and run the fan at high speed. So as long as the key is in the "ON" position and the switch is on, it will run the fan at high speed.

So you can cool the motor down at the drag strip etc....

how long can i run with it on ?

Till the battery dies. duh lol.

i just bought the switch and everything i need to hook it up. now i just need the time to do it, hopefully today i can rip off the kickplate and figure out where everything should go.

If you dont want to go though all the hassle of wiring in a switch, just unplug your coolant temp sensor on the intake and turn the key on. Fan runs. Reconect, back to OEM. Not trying to be a smartass.

But then you can't see what the motor is running at.

no i definately know i wanna put a switch in, only problem is i have nowhere on the dash i can put it in, im trying to find the perfect spot, my friends import has a spot for like 5 switches. the least ford couldave done was stick in a spot for it. you guys have a pic of where you put yours?

Don't put that on your dash that is tacky as hell. Mine is mounted on the passenger kick panel up high where you can not see it. It took around 20 mins to cut the panel, mount the switch, and run the one ground wire to complete the switch. Mine also lights up red so I see a red glow in the foot well which reminds me I left it on. Your not gonna use it often so you don't need to see it. That's just me though I like it clean.

not a bad idea, i may put it on the inside of the driver side, next to the shifter but facing my feet, i think that one might be a good spot for it. i could put it on the passenger side but my g/f has a habit of playing with every switch in my car. its really fuckin annoying and i dont need her playing with that one

do you by any chance know what gauge wire it is?

I can't remember the exact size but its small. I want to say its 18 or 14.

i opened up the panel and im lost, ive been lookin close at every single wire and cant find numbers anywhere except the green box in the picture which has 1-20. can somebody with some expertese point me to the right wire or if im even in the right spot?

You need a haynes or chilton manual to know the color of the wire. Or a google search I am sure will come up with it. I can't remember the color. I want to say green/lite purple was the color.

the picture i have listed is the wiring diagram from the haynes manual and the purple/ lt green wire is circled, would you be able to tell me from my last picture where the powertrain control module is?


scratch that, found it. so now i just do an inline tap for the switch, ground it to the frame and mount?

Any solid ground will work. Mine us just grounded to whatever solid metal part with a bolt in it near the ECU was.

yes that will keep the fan running but will not let a/c run. i was doing that in my v6 till the heat got here. it did keep it nice and cool

read that article and completely shot everything i was gonna do to hell... i have a single pole single throw led switch with 3 prongs. one power, one accessory, and one ground. do i have to tap into a power source with the power prong and run accessory to the fan wire. or do i run both to the fan wire. question being does the fan wire provide power?

only time fan wire has power should be when fan is running

so i guess for the switch to work i have to tap into a power lead run accessory to the fan wire and ground. Am i right?
