Headers for 01 Cobra
 

Hey,
I am looking for a upgrade for my exhaust, I stumbled across the Cobra loudmouth exhaust from SLP. I think it should be a good buy (Please correct me if wrong). But I also want to replace the headers at the same time. So does anyone know of a good set of headers that would work with the midpipe I am thinking about?
Also, if it turns out that I have missed the fact that Loudmouth is bad, and you know a better set up for exhasut, please post it, I would like to know. But it has to has a good sound, I dont want no quite system, Muscle all the way baby!

SLP makes quality stuff, but you should listen to some exhaust clips before purchasing them. SLP loudmouth's are ear piercing loud, especially with a mid-pipe and headers.

SLP is very raspy and crackly. I personally don't like the sound of them, but you should listen to all different types of exhaust for yourself and see what you like. Everyone on here will have their own personal opinion. If you click on the link in my sig, it will have a video of what my car sounds like with long tube headers, o/r x-pipe and flowmaster mufflers. If you want long tubes, Kooks, Hooker/Flowtech, and BBK I know make 4V headers. Not sure on SLP and Mac. Shorties you're limited to FRPP, BBK, and JBA. Mid-lengths you got Bassani and JBA. Personally, I wouldn't both w/ shorties.

Also, the Loudmouth isn't a mid-pipe, it's the cat-back exhaust portion (hence the term cat-back). Mid-pipes depend on the brand of headers you want. Shorties use stock style mid-pipes while mid-lengths and long tubes use a shorty mid-pipe (get one from the same company as the headers to avoid fitiment problems).

Thanks, so if it is just an extension, what else do I need to buy, or will it just work with and replace some stock parts. Also, the only headers on their site are off road only, which I guess means that they are too loud. Thanks for the help so far though.

off road means it wont pass emissions. when purchasing a mid pipe if it says off road or o/r for abreviation it simply means it doesnt have catalytic converters and you wont pass emissions. it doesnt matter if your state doesnt do emissions testing.

btw i have stock manifolds and a bbk o/r hpipe with flowmasters and it is nice and deep and loud bc i have them dumped.

something to remember hpipes will give you a deep rumble while xpipes will give you a more raspy high pitched tone.

Anything you get will make it "sound like a Mustang".

It's hard to be diffrent.

there's a set of cobra longtubes on the SF bay area craigslist for hella cheap with x pipe.

American Racing Headers longtubes with catted x pipe. All stainless steel, best fitment, and best quality. Catback of your choice. I personally hate SLP. Makes the car sound like an old rusted out pickup truck. I would recommend a JBA, Mac, Bassani, or Borla catback. My setup is ARH longtubes, catted x pipe, and JBA catback and I love it. The whole exhaust is stainless steel, fits perfectly, and the quality could not be better.

A guy I used to work with had a 99-2000 Mustang GT dead stock except that it had a loudmouth catback. I don't understand how the car could be so loud and crappy sounding with just that catback but it sure did. I think those loudmouth catbacks are basically almost a straight pipe and that one sounded terrible in my opinion. He hit the gas and passed me one day on the street when I didnt know he was there and I thought some piece of crap truck was going by until I saw him.

Now other people seem to think that SLP makes good quality parts but the sound of their loudmouth catback is just awful. Another brand of mufflers I'll stay away from is Pypes. They seem to make good quality stuff too but I heard a 5.0 with their catback and it also sounded like a raggedy pickup truck with rust holes in the exhaust.

So I have a new proposition, tell me what you think. BBK long tube headers and matching catted H pipe. I have heard the rule is H=lower more of a rumble sound. And that is what I was gunning for. So, tell me what you guys think, maybe you know someone with it on and you like it or don't.

The catback will decide how the car will sound. First pick a catback you like and then match it to headers and x/h pipe. Alot of people have and like BBK. For the price they are good. I would've gone with BBK if I didn't win my headers and x pipe.

Take a look on youtube because a zillion mustang owners video record the sound of their exhaust systems with different components. I'm new to the 4.6 cars but between my two 5.0s I had a longtube/H pipe setup on one, and the other had shorties with an X pipe. Both cars had the same exact magnaflow catback and the one with longtubes/H pipe was way meaner sounding and was louder. So thats why I suggest you listen on youtube to as many combinations as you can.

Friend has BBK long tubes, o/r H-pipe and Mac catback on a 1999 Cobra and it sounds awesome. Its the exhaust setup I would do if I had the car.

Well, now that we have established that when I started this thread that I had idea what I was talking about, but now that I have been educated, I would like to thank you. Here is my final decision, give me you feed back (For the last time I hope).

BBK longtube headers with matching shortty catted H-Pipe and SLP loudmouth tailpipe.

Sorry my friends car has the Dynomax Ultraflow catback not Mac. I would strongly suggest against the LM1 but if its what you really want go for it as you are the one who has to drive it.

You have way more options then that. Why do you limit yourself to just those?

On the website, there are only three catbacks for a 2001 cobra

You could always order it, install, and if you don't like it, have an exhaust shop swap out mufflers for you.
