altenater

when do i know when to move over to a higher amp altenater? even if i dont need one will it hurt to go up in amps from the stock altenater?

You add up all the amps that your electrical system draws. If that total is larger than the alt's output, then you need a higher output one. However, it won't hurt to go to a higher, just no need to waste your cash unless you need to.

You shouldnt have to unless you add a massive stereo or etc in your car, i think.

If you have a powerful stereo, do the dash lights/headlights dim a lot when the bass hits? If this happens, you might want to upgrade. Replacement hi-output alternators are expensive though. Also, having more than you need won't hurt anything....just your wallet! I have a 200A alternator, because my stereo is around 1000W RMS(oldschool orion amps).

I also have a 200amp alt and remember you will have to upgrade the wiring going from the alt to the battery with a thicker gauge. http://www.paperformance.com/scripts...?idCategory=20

Its a good idea to go ahead and upgrade the wires from the alternator positive to battery positive, the battery negaive to the chassis and also the engine ground to chassis all to at least 4 gauge or thicker, this is a good idea if you have a high power system
