i had the same thing with mine and it definitely sounds like the syncrhos...i had my whole tranny rebuilt for free under warranty...if you still have a warranty, take your car to the dealership and show them by taking them on a ride along

If you have an aftermarket shifter, remove it.If the tranny is under warranty,Ford will try like he11 to void it based on the shifter.Replace the shifter boot along with the old shifter or they will know the stock shifter was replaced.Have someone other than yourself buy this new shifter boot because they put you in the database and it will show that you bought the new boot. Why would you buy a new shifter boot other than to replace the shifter with?Sounds CRAZY don't it???You're not paranoid when they really are out to get you!!!

i didnt remove my shifter..i first asked the tech if i should and he told me that "the shifter has nothing to do with why your syncrhos went bad, so you are ok"..

Thats what I was told"over the phone".When I got to the dealer that's when they started acting weird.I got lucky,it was only the shifter stop bolts that had vibrated loose(my fault,no Loctite) and the tranny shifts fine now.I was told in no uncertain terms that Ford would not pay to fix a tranny problem that had an aftermarket shifter installed. Now I know about the Moss-Magnussen act,but who wants to fight for months(?) over a possibly expensive repair bill. All dealers are different however or Ford would have went out of buisness a couple of years after the aftermarket came into existence.
