steering shaft question

Does anyone know what the diameter is around the steering shaft where the bushing normally melts (from heat of longtubes)? I am looking at getting some heat shielding to go around the bushing to keep it from melting and need to know what the size should be.

This is what I plan on using...anybody used this before and if so, did it work?

Just get an aftermarket shaft that doesn't have the POS rag-joint. Maximum Motorsports has some of the best.

I would like to do this but the issue here is cost...I looked at the MM shaft and its $249. This heat shielding is $5-10.

Well, not sure on the diameter but it's not hard to measure since it located (even w/ headers) out in the open, kind of. However, if you're worried, this is only a band-aid and the MM shaft makes the car feel so much better and precise.
