What makes an exhaust pop??????
 

What makes an exhuast pop when you let off. What kind of setup do you need to have that happen?????

Right now i have SLP Loudmouth 1 what else do I need to have that happen????

Apparently, they say you need to have an x-pipe but I dunno what you need . I do know you have to have it at high rpms and just let it coast while in gear. 3rd and 2nd gear pops pretty good, but 1st pops like a mad crazy person when you let off gas around 5k.

Well I had ford racing headers, bbk offroad x pipe and muffler deletes and it was very loud, the loud popping when slowing down was awesome, but I decided to install pypes pro v mufflers, oh man I didnt realize I was losing so much torque with the muffler deletes, I would like to thank the local law enforcement for their help in persuading me to get mufflers.........hehehe oh yea I think maybe the more free flowing your exhaust is the more popping, because now it doesnt pop as much

Backfiring or "popping" is due to a lean condition or an exhaust leak.Niether one is good.This is not to be confused with the burble that a well tuned and wicked sounding car makes.

you would lose 1-2 mpg...and the torque isnt innumbers, but man it feels like you gained about 150, its awsome, it feels like a new car..

I went with a 3in xpipe and straights, let me tell ya, it pops like a MOTHERFU**ER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish i had a vid camera, get some vid or sound clips.

Isnnt that popping basically just backfiring? to get that you really gotta lose your backpressure.

What kind of x pipe is it.... and where is the straight pipe from the x pipe back

no brand, it is just a custom made job from a performance exhaust place here in colorado, they make thier own midpipes, they do a bitchin job of it too.

Yah, straight from xpipe back. no mufflers. I cant say enough about the place that did it. Everything is welded into one big piece from the cats back. got 16in long 3.5in diameter chrome exhaust tips too.

Whole setup ran me $250.00 out the door and took em 45 minuits. Thier welds are freakin unbelieveable too. I had to get some work done on it at the dealership, the service manager pulled all the mechanics over and showed them the welding job so they could all ooohhh and aaaahhhh over it. cracked me up.

but yah, if i punch the gas and let up it pops nicely.

the car felt a tad bit sluggish on the lower rpms untill i got the CAI, that seemed to take care of that, it definatly has a little more kick to it on the higher rpms.

some people call straights "redneck exhaust", but it sounds like music to my ears.

also my feul economy dropped about 20-30 miles a tank. eh.. big deal. :happy3:

yep removing the catalytic converters will give you that popping sound you are talking about mine has no cats and just mufflers and still pops sounds lovely though.

The "popping" im talking about is definitely not "backfiring" Backfiring is definitely some nasty stuff............

Is it true you can keep all your gauges working properly after
you've removed the cats IF you get a new o2 censor?
something about fooling the computer into thinking they
are still there..

i use mil eliminators, or use a programmer to just turn the rear o2 sensors off

Yes your guages will be accurate, it makes your computer think the cats are still in place :kermit:

So if i took off my cats my O2 censors would be all messed along with my gauges

Basically what will happen when you take the cats off, the rear 02 sensors will tell the computer that the cats arent working correctly, "true because they arent there" the computer will go into safe mode, setting off your check engine light or as some call it "mil" to correct this situation you have to either buy MIL ELIMINATORS, which plug inline with your rear 02 sensors, or option b would be to get a computer programmer that gives you the option of turning your rear 02 sensors off, which eliminates the trouble code from the computer, getting the computer out of safe mode, which will turn the "MIL" or check engine light off, giving you back the performance, which is lost when the check engine light is on
