what is needed for gears?
 

hey guys...i have a 97 ford mustang (auto) and i just purchased a set of frpp 4.10 gears from mustang tuning. From what i hear i also need a intallation kit and a bearing kit? is this true or not? also, ive heard that i need a speedo recalibration kit because my speedo will be off after gettin this installed? So if you can, let me know if i need all or any of these and the correct names for them. thanks ...oh and also...how much $ for installation?

The installation/bearing kit is only needed if you have a high mileage car! When I got my gears installed I only had a few thousand miles on my car so the bearing kit was not needed! Seeing as your stang is a 97 I would think you have over 80k miles, so you will need it! The installation price varies from shop to shop! I however got my gears installd for $135 including oils;)! Yes you will need a speed calibrator to correct the speedometer from the gears! However i am not sure if the speed calibrator works for your year! I thought they were only made for 99+ fords but I could be wrong so don't take my word for it!

my 97 stang has almost 35,000...so do you think i need the bearing kit? obviously i need the installation kit no matter what, but im debating on whether or not to spend the $90 for the bearing kit...also what do i do if there isn't a speedo corrector for my 97? there's no way i would even put my gears in if my speedo was wrong and my miles were increasing too quickly...

It looks like you won't be able to use the speed calibrator as it only works for 94-04 manual mustangs! Check out this link! I'm sure their is a way to fix your gears though, so I wouln't worry about it! Just wait for the response from some of the auto guys running gears!

even with the low miles i would get the bearing kit, it is 8 years old and to have that few miles it has been sitting quite a bit. I have a 96 but it is a 5 speed, i thought the auto speedos were changed the same way but im not sure on it

Chances are you need to just get the car tuned/chipped. Speed Cals wont work with automatics, and the speedometer gears wont work either (because the dont exist). I would save up your money for a chip or tuner and just get the car tuned and have the tuner change the computers gear ratio for you, and get some performance out of your cars modifications to boot.

alright thats what i think ill end up doing...because of my car being auto, i dont really have any options with tuning my speedo for the gears, which makes it worthless putting them in. I think ill do some smaller bolt ons first (intake, t/b, plenum, pulleys, headers, midpipe) and then ill get a chip and get my car tuned after that so all of my mods will be tuned with the car. I'm also thinking of doing a b&m stage 2 shift improver kit. Thanks everyone for all your input.

in a 97. it's a mechanical analog system. i bet you can buy a gear to go in there.

if you get an o/r midpipe, get it the same time as your tuner so you can shut off the back o2 sensors, and a tuner you can control shift strength also

Not from Ford Racing. Check 50resto.com They have the speedo gears, and their gears only go up to 3.55 for the mechanical system for that year.

do you even need the installation kit with frpp gears? cuz they come with shims already, what else is in the kit?

Speedcal will work on manual OR autot Mustangs 96- 98, 99-up ar electronically controlled. New speedo tooth gear is worthless like Shambles said. There ar enow actually different speedcals, I think the Dallas Mustang site has the differences.
