96 FORD GT

I am in need of a need motor for my friends car. The car is a GT 4.6L and with an auto trans. The motor is bad and so is the trans. What can I install in it and can we go newer motor and trans for the car...

big difference between a ford gt and a mustang gt lol

Depends on what you want to do with the car. If its just a DD that horsepower doesn't matter just go get a used 96-98 motor and toss it back in. Or you can swap in a 99-04 2v and get more power or you can do a 4v swap. I mean if you have the toss the motor and tranny you have alot of options.

If I go with a 99 on up motor will I need to change the wiring in the car or will it work and going from a 2V to a 4V will I need to change wiring on that and will the trans( man from an auto) from a 99 on up bolt right in and the drive shaft be diff too....

time for a 5.4. <skulks away and waits for the questions>

nothing like it in a OHC mustang. Gobs of tq, simple install.

how come nobody else thought of the 5.4

r3dn3ck 08-10-2008 08:41 AM

cuz that's my job. The boys know I'll jump in sooner or later with the 5.4 option oozing out of every pore.

Any modular v8 will install moron easy. Keep your existing wiring and fuel systems, grab a set of adapter plates for the intake and take the H-pipe down to the local muffler shop to be fiddled with.

So I should go with a 5.4 swap and what year is the best for this car and what is all involved.....

should is up to you... It's simply a suggestion.

Any year 5.4 motor will do as a donor. I'd look for those from expeditions and vans from 00-03 so you get the PI heads. Get the complete motor including the front cover and tensioner or you'll hate yourself. You can usually find a donor motor for <1000 bucks complete at local salvage yards.

To install you'll need to decide on the intake solution, exhaust solution, how much grunt you actually want, cam selection, gear selection, how you'll drive it (and where) and a budget.

The most basic install requires adapter plates for the intake so you can use your mustangs stock PI intake and a little modification to the h-pipe (add 2" to the passenger side down pipe). Other than that there's really nothing that you can't do with simple hand tools and a cherry picker. Skylark installed his for like 500 bucks all in... but he did ALL the work.

Once it's installed then you'll need a tune before you beat on it too hard. I like 3.55 gears for street cars, 3.73's for cars with more of a track orientation.
