Strange Noise While Decelarating

Ok so today while I was driving I noticed a rather strange noise underneath the car when I was decelarating. It sounded as if something was scraping the ground or something. I checked under the car and nothing was hanging. I took the car out again and when I get off the throttle I hear the noise again. Anyone know what this may be?

what year car? how many miles on it? were you down shifting or just letting off the gas?

BubbastanGT 07-25-2008 06:19 AM

01 Gt, Auto, 100k miles. It happens when I let off the gas.

I'm guessing it's something with the trans.

are you sure the noise is under the car and not under the hood? as it could be a problem wth a belt tensioner or an idler pulley.....now if it is under the car, check your trans mount and u-joints

i know this sounds crazy but you might have an exhaust leak. mine sounded so bad i was sure the noise was coming from the drivetrain. check for an exhaust leak first.

I havent been able to get it up on a lift or jack the car up yet. The noise is coming from driver side, in front of pedal area. It has become rather frequent now when getting off the gas especially at higher speeds 40+. When letting off at higer speeds, the noise occurs for a longer duration 4-5 seconds of clattering. I told my wife that it was the mid pipe and that I needed to get a new one ASAP, so Im kinda pumped about that :D.
Dont know if this added description helped at all. Im going to get it put up on a lift next weekend and l'll check the stuff you mentioned Randy. What about motor mounts, could that also cause this?
If it was transmission related wouldnt it make any noise while accelerating? Thanks for the help guys.
