Screen in front of MAF

Can any one tell me what that screen is for and what if I remove it. Seems like it just would reduce flow. And also what is the difference between the mac cold air and the Steeda besides price and do you really gain about 10 HP?
Thanks

The screen has a purpose. It is to provide smooth, laminar flow across the MAF. Testing has shown that removing the screen will lean-up your a/f a bit. Most after-market CAI's do not utilize the screen.

It is also entirely possible that some of the leaning gets corrected over time as the long-range fuel curves compensate for the lean a/f. I have never seen a good study that has evaluated this over a period of time.

It is unlikely in an n/a application, that a CAI would net 10 hp. The gain are probably small. However, a design like the Steeda will give you a nice ram air effect when drag racing. You can pull the headlight out for use at the track. You will see as much at 10 hp gain while at speeds and pick up as much as 1 - 2 mph in the traps.

Thanks man
So I take it, that I will get the Steeda over the mac and dont take the screen out?

You should check these out too...Plastic piping doesn't heat up and performs well www.demolet.com you can order these systems at www.v6mustangstuff.com too, not as popular but about 80-100 bucks cheaper.

I have the CAI and they instructed me to take it out.

Every CAI I have seen requires you to pull the screen. The dirty little secret that the CAI manufactures don't want you to know is that that is where some of the hp improvement comes from. A leaner a/f (to a point) will net more hp.

Regarding the use of materials and to say that plastic is better than metal empirically has no basis in fact. This is one of those things that sounds good on paper or seems to make sense. However, I have never seen a study that has demonstrated that a plastic intake of same design will net more hp than a metal one. The difference in gains are so marginal in part because modern computer systems compensate for temperature changes.

We do know that colder in-comming air will result in hp gains, but I have never seen proof that a plastic intake can keep the incomming air cooler than a metal intake can to the point where there is a difference in hp.

dont buy a cold air kit. get a nice filter and be done with it. sometimes the screen leans you out, sometimes it doesnt.

If getting any aftermarket Intake system, I suggest one with a Plastic intake tube.....

And the MAF screen is not NEEDED at all........Took mine out... dont notice any negative issues...
