best shifts??

ok, ive had a couple of months with my 00 Gt manual, my question is, around what rpm do i shift for the quickest acceleration? ive tried testing it a few times, but i need someone elses opinion, any help is appreciated, thanks.

just before red line.

edit: waow ok my bad......not thinkin. just before red line if your racing. just cruising, theres another thread that kinda put everyone around the 2-3 mark.

kool thanks alot man, i kept thinking that it might be quick shifts around 2.5 for first, and so on, but ill definitely try this method.:)

Hey Jerry, these motors start to pickup pretty well @ about 2800 rpms. If you shift around 2500 to 3000 you should have no problems at all.

Thats street driving

Drag racing at the track (all out racing) I shift from 1st to 2nd at about 3.5 RPMS and then I shift just before redline after that.

It depends on a lot of things but generally, you want to shift at the rpm where you make peak power. However, depending on gearing in the trans and your power curve, you may have to shift slightly earlier or later.

I'm pretty positive that our motors best shift when racing is 6250 rpms.

Jerry, a lot is by feel and be sure you cxan shift well first before banging home the gears without lifting the gas pedal. 1st gear will rev to redline, 2nd may be near that but 3rd may have less poweer to pull that far so 5400-5500epm may be right for you, same wih the next, power falls off-SHIFT!

For the racing scenario, think of it like this... you want to shift at a high enough RPM that when you drop into the next gear, you are back in your power band as quickly as possible. In most cases that just means to rev out to redline in each gear... Look at this scenariofor the 1/4 mile:
Stock 4.6, fuel cutoff @ 6250, 3.27 gears...
1-2 shift: 43 mph - 6250 RPM (1st) to 3660 (2nd)
2-3 shift: 73 mph - 6250 RPM (2nd) to 4150 (3rd)
stay in 3rd thru traps because top of 3rd is 110 MPH

If you have 4.10:1 gears it changes things a bit...
1-2 shift: 35 mph - 6250 RPM (1st) to 3740 (2nd)
2-3 shift: 59 mph - 6250 RPM (2nd) to 4200 (3rd)
3-4 shift: 88 mph - 6250 RPM (3rd) to 4725 (4th)

With the 4.10 gears, each shift places you in a better portion of the rev band, but you need to make an additional shift to make it thru the traps

Having some better valvetrain components (springs) and a set of cams you can extend the fuel cutoff to 6500 RPM and that helps a great deal with the power band and the rev drops

Mod'd 4.6, fuel cutoff @ 6500, 3.27 gears...
1-2 shift: 45 mph - 6500 RPM (1st) to 3880 (2nd)
2-3 shift: 76 mph - 6500 RPM (2nd) to 4325 (3rd)
stay in 3rd thru traps because top of 3rd is 114 MPH

If you have 4.10:1 gears it changes things a bit...
1-2 shift: 36 mph - 6500 RPM (1st) to 3850 (2nd)
2-3 shift: 61 mph - 6500 RPM (2nd) to 4350 (3rd)
3-4 shift: 91 mph - 6500 RPM (3rd) to 4880 (4th)

Now that I am running the 5.4 engine my redline is set at 5700 that changes a lot... except now I have the torque to still pull hard when I shift.
