Just got them in in the mail, any tips on the install?

Lazerred6 03-07-2008 01:51 PM

If you use an impact wrench it's quick and easy 15min

01FR500 03-07-2008 01:56 PM

Do you need a harmonic balancer puller? If so you might need to go to Autozone or something and rent one. I'm not sure about this on the GT's, but I needed on on my v6. You can watch the video that AM has on the pulley install, it's pretty good.

tdthomas64 03-07-2008 02:07 PM

K, ya i was planning on loaning one from autozone if i decide to do it myself, but i dont have a impact wrench can i do w/ out?

01FR500 03-07-2008 03:30 PM

I don't know, it would probably be a PITA. Every motor that I have disassembled and taken the crank pulley off I used a impact and even then i had to crank on it for a while.

TUFF 4.6 03-07-2008 06:13 PM

You dont need to pull the balancer but breaking the crank bolt is going to be pain in the Oss. If you can get someone to hold the flywheel with a prybar may be your only hope. Good Luck

tdthomas64 03-07-2008 08:08 PM

Ya, I just found a impact wrench my friends got.... R you sure i don need a puller?

bassman97 03-08-2008 07:24 AM

If you don't have an impact wrench, to keep the crank from turning, leave the car in gear and on the ground (if you have stick). If you have an auto, P should take care of it too. Just remember, a lot of torque is needed so make sure you have a bar to out on the end of a breaker bar. As for the question for the puller, you still need the puller but the bolt has to come off first before you use it.

tdthomas64 03-08-2008 08:05 AM

Ya thats what i figured and i did locate a impact wrench so hopefully it will be cake... but i havnt really looked at it much yet

tdthomas64 03-08-2008 02:45 PM

I bought the bbk aluminum kit, N i just opened them and i believe they are the piggy back type... Is that bad, should i exchange them for ones that replace the crank???? Will I have problems w/ this in the long run??

MichaelsLilGray 03-08-2008 04:45 PM

I have the BBK Kit you are talking about... Piggy back style kits are... ok i guess.. Id just recommend staying with your oem pulleys.. ill be putting mine back on later. The only thing you will need a impact for is the alternatorpully if you do put them on. As far as the crank.. if you dont have a way to raise the car... Run your gas out, using the enersia switch in the back.. when out. put a breaker bar on the crank pulley. going with the engine. make sure you know which way your belt goes. With no gas just turn the engine 1 turn. with the bar on the ground, it should impact it with enough tourqe to break it free. You WILL need a pulley kit, to remove the crank pulley... you can go to your local parts store and buy one for 11 bucks... i have 2 LOL.
The water pump pully you can remove with the 4 bolts... easy.. believe they are 8mm.. Do this step with the belt still on the car. it will hold the pulley still enough to break them lose. (reverse the process to install) The water pump pulley when tightening will slip across the belt. Just tighten to that point.. kind of jerk on it to give it a little impact wrench feel.

Take off your alternator and take it to say pep boys or a local shop and ask them to put the pulley on for you. DO NOT PUT THE WATER PUMP PULLY ON BEFORE YOU REPLACE THE ALTORnATOR. You wont be able to get to the bolt.. i kinda learned that the hard way LOL

bassman97 03-09-2008 12:06 PM

Why would you need to run the gas out for pulleys? The only time you need to run the gas out is for work on the fuel system, usually.

MichaelsLilGray 03-09-2008 04:01 PM

Well if you will be replacing the dampner, and you dont have a large enough breakerbar to get leverage from the top of the car. you will have to use the ground to break it. If you want it to break, and you turn the car one cycle... the car may start... and if it starts it will spin the damper off the crank. so yeah that wouldnt be to good x.x

bassman97 03-10-2008 06:56 AM

If the key is not in the ignition and in the on position, it can't start.

tdthomas64 03-10-2008 08:10 AM

So will I have any problems w/ the piggyback n the long run??

MichaelsLilGray 03-11-2008 06:15 AM

I dont see why you would. Wben installing though if you possible, get some RV sealant and put a bead on both sides of the dampner key. Im not sure why they used 2 keys on the BBK pulley but they did. Just make sure you do that or you will lose a little oil.. and it goes all over the place after a while

tdthomas64 03-11-2008 08:53 AM

Ha, thanks I just was watching the american muscle install video for the speeta and they had a piggy back style that kept getting loose and wobbling n setting off the chec engine light so i was just wondering if that happens often

MichaelsLilGray 03-11-2008 02:37 PM

Mine didnt do that.... Just make sure you tighten it down evenly.. and everything comes out 100% if you dont like how it looks or how it went on.. take it off and do it again

MichaelsLilGray 03-11-2008 02:39 PM

Ill be here and look on and off today of you plan on doing it today... Better yet give me a call if you run into any questions... ill pm it to you if you want

tdthomas64 03-11-2008 02:54 PM

I Think im gonna do it tomorrow, How long did you have them running for?

MichaelsLilGray 03-11-2008 03:46 PM

What do you mean? How long have i had them on the car? If thats the question ive had them for 2 months now

tdthomas64 03-11-2008 05:02 PM

ya thats wut i ment...

tdthomas64 03-11-2008 05:09 PM

ive just heard that they were crap and got loose often n triggered check engine lights and this one guy on here was sayin that his water pump went so i think im gonna wait the extra few day n return it for the steeda haha

MichaelsLilGray 03-11-2008 09:17 PM

If you ask me, go with steeda. mine worked but it looks ghey with the old dampner covering the pretty chrome =(

thebeastum 03-23-2008 02:41 PM

i have had mine on for a year and have had no problems.
