5.4L SOHC vs 4.6L DOHC
okay, i was getting tired of a certain someone ruining a thread that had some really good information in it.. so i wanted to go through and find the good points and make a new thread... please don't spam this one!! (also a some of some of the 3000+ posted 5.4l swap page)
5.4L SOHC makes good amount of Hp (around the same as a 4.6L SOHC) Makes a Crap load of torque 30+ over built 4.6L is crazy easy and cheap. PARTS NEEDED: 5.4L (out of a f-150 or like engine) intake adapter kit (or for better hp/tq HPS intake) Swap over oil pan, Modify 2 heater hoses and need a new front cover and timing kit. With this you DO NOT need to swap the ECU the stock will work, and you don't need a tune, but it is reconmended. 4.6L DOHC Makes the decint power to the wheels stock A decent amount of torque. more expensive PARTS NEEDED: 4.6L DOHC engine you will need to extend you cops and a couple sensors if you buy an aviator extra you need iming cover coolant crossover power steering pump position and also in most cases you will need to buy a new ECU, you can use a stock GT one but it takes work!! So for money and power go with the 5.4L for a bigger power jump at the start go for the 4.6L DOHC.. and also for FI engine the 5.4L will produce more power due to the longer stroke and you can force more air in (but you will HAVE to forge the 5.4L for any FI) That is my basic understanding of things... R3D and others that HAVE done the 5.4L swap please correct my information is wrong.. and R3D you don't want this thread because its just a repeat, i just was tired of looking at that the other thread... |
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol... people can duke it out in here all they want |
I would have to agree with all of the above. I'm going 5.4L because I have always been extremely impressed with the Lightning and the response that motor has when aftermarket parts are put on it and best of all swapping the blower for a turbo. So I had a turbo made for the 5.4 bought a 03GT threw it on the 4.6L and blew it up, Now it's time for the 5.4 with a serious bottom end and all the rest of the goodies. My thought was "if that Lightning can pull that hard just think what that amount of torque would do in a car 2000 lbs lighter!"
Just my 2Cents and why im going with the 5.4 and a Turbo. |

Just my 2Cents and why im going with the 5.4 and a Turbo. i found a Aviator 4.6l 4V on ebay for 1,700... I guess when it comes to decision time on which route im gonna go, im just gonna haave to see how much my budget is and take a look and see. i'd rather get the 4v 4.6l to be honest. Buy it, keep it in the garage, get it built up a bit while i trash my 4.6l 2v. lol. plus, i KNOW my shaker will fit the 4v, while it might be difficult getting it to fit on the 5.4. from what i understand the 5.4 sits a few inches higher. but damn, 300ftlbs of torque at the wheels on 2200rpm... That has GOTTA be fun |

There's several versions of the 5.4 4V, with different cylinder heads, shortblocks, cams, intakes, compression, and so on.
The Navigator, Blackwood, 2000 Cobra R, Ford GT and the Shelby GT500 all had or have 5.4 4Vs. Navigator had it first in '99. |
FWIW, I did not have to change my coolant lines, was a perfect fit
|
now if it really wasn't an money issue i would say do the 5.4L 4v its the best of both worlds, great and awesome flow, and a bigger displacement!!

would you by any chance know what all has to be done to make a good 5.4L 4v.. and lets say i know you would have to build it, but would you easily be able to make on go up to a cobras red at 6.8K? that would be a really fun engine right there.. and plus if you go and FI it.. wow.. think of the power output you can make!

Id say either a set of b heads or navi or hell about any cobra head with supporting hardware should see 400 to the backs without too much of an issue. Get crazy with the combo and one in particular has made 590ish to the wheels na. Hard to beat this combo ASSUMING you have the money to do it |
I'm tempted to throw a set of 03/04 cobra heads on my 5.4, not counting the 2v-4v conversion, they're cheaper than a "good" set of ported 2v heads. I'm talking new, with stock valvetrain, $1820+shipping But then theres the eternal question of an intake.

that's a lot easier to solve than you might think. You can use kar-kraft adapter plates and a NA cobra intake or nix the plates and use a sullivan intake or one of a few others. MM&FF did a big test of them just a couple issues ago. They also have 4v cylinder heads advertised (complete) for <700 a pair.
http://www.karkraft.com/cylinder_heads.htm You can find some useful head flow data here: http://users.erols.com/srweiss/tablehdc.htm Don't take it all as gospel but it's all in line with advertised figures. |
