well....the keeper snuck past the rag and went into the oil passage


does that passage go all the way to the oil pan? can i just pull the pan and get it out? or just drain the oil?


guess i missed the part that said SHOVE A RAG INTO THE OIL GALLEY HOLE........instead of just put a rag over the hole.....the rag caught it a few times....and i donno how it snuck past it the last time.....but....it did

i have no clue how it got past the rag....and i didn't see it go down the hole, i just heard it fall....and then *clink*

Id start by draining the oil and removing the pan. When I did it, I had a buddy help me. He compressed the spring just enough so I could remove the keepers with a magnet.

When reinstalling them, he compressed the spring and I put one in with the magnet, held it there and he released the spring just enough so it would hold the keeper. Then I turned the keeper into position, he compressed the spring and I installed the next one.

yeah....its not THAT hard of a process....i got one in fine.....just the second one....when i was installing the second keeper...i was just trying to put it in place by hand...and it just slid away from me.....

...it slid away from me a few times and the rag caught it....thats the worst part....because i gained confidence in the rag being there

Oh well, shit happens. Lets just hope you can get it out.

yeah, the bad part about that is, i don't have anybody in my family who knows shit about cars....i don't have any close friends who are willing to help me, or actually know anything about cars.....

....just doin it by myself....trying to figure things out alone....it sucks....

Try sticking a magnet down the galley to see if you pick anything up. Somehow I doubt the oil passages are a straight shot to the oil pan and chances are its stuck in one of the turns. If you find nothing in your pan, than this is probably what happened. If that's the case, you gotta find a way to pull up or push it out (like using an air compressor to blow it out).

yeah... it should be a reasonably straight shot. In any case, don't panic. It's just a PITA, not a disaster.

You can pour oil through the galley to make sure the keeper is all the way down in the pan. Now get a big ass magnet (or a very strong small one) and start systematically touching it to the pan around where the galley ends and dragging it along the pan to the plug hole. use a screen in your oil catch to make sure you get the damn thing. In any case there's a screen in your oil pickup tube so it won't make it to the pump. It's still no good to have it down there but the risk of damage is minimal and pouring quart after quart of oil through will normally dislodge all but really stuck debris.

used a magnet and stuck it in from the front of the pan, pulled it right out!

just some advice, when I was putting the keepers back into position instead of trying to use magnets and such...put some grease on your finger and use that to get them back into place, thats what seemed to work best for me. Once I started doing that I got really good at doing it by touch and flew through the rest of them

yeah....i have been just using my fingers....it works the best for me....just glad i don't have fat fingers
