how hard are head swaps on 2v's??

How hard are these head swaps?? I was told its not worth doing?? Leave me some feedback!

r3dn3ck 10-31-2007 03:15 PM

do you know how to do it on any other kind of car?

slow2v 10-31-2007 03:29 PM

ive helped buddies do it, but this GM tech who has a mustang says its alot harder than other cars, and not worth doing. But if heads are assembled, it should be a swap....(not saying its "simple")

r3dn3ck 10-31-2007 03:38 PM

it is actually kinda simple.

It's a fackload easier than a SBC or SBF head swap... no setting valve lash or any of that crap. Don't forget to get head studs (get ARP studs.. stock are TTY and not reusable).

I don't think it's even the least bit difficult to pull a head off a 2v car. 4v are a little harder but still easier than a pushrod motor. if you know what you're doing as far as using the torque wrench and matching timing marks then it's cake. i think my record with the motor out of the car is 15 minutes to pull the head.

pull front cover, pull intake, pull valve cover, pull timing chains/tensioners/arms, remove exhaust manifolds, pull heads, replace HG, replace head bolts/studs, reassemble in reverse order. Done.

r3dn3ck 10-31-2007 03:39 PM

oh.. no it's not exactly what you'd call "easy" but for anyone handy with a wrench it's more time consuming than classically difficult.

I did a HG job 3.0L V6 on a 4 runner a while back. That was HARD and complex. This isn't.

slow2v 10-31-2007 04:05 PM

what would you guess a shop would charge for this kinda work?? assembled everything, just to install cams in heads, and install heads?

03gtmustang 10-31-2007 04:33 PM

At least a grand.

slow2v 10-31-2007 04:45 PM

thats what i was thinking, i know a bunch of mechanics who work for GM and whatnot, might have one of them give me a hand one weekend, they all know what theyre doing.

bassman97 10-31-2007 04:46 PM

Just do it yourself. It will take time but you will be saving money. Don't forget to drain the coolant otherwise you will have a mess. Here's a good write up using Patriot heads:

I had a shop do a head swap for me, ended up costing around $1,500. Had the new heads machined and a valve job done as well.

slow2v 11-01-2007 07:58 AM

So you had your heads worked, and cams installed? but you have a 4V motor, so that would be more since its twice as many valves? Or is it on your GT?? I just want heads and cams installed after i buy them. Were you happy with the install/work/performance???

slow2v 11-01-2007 09:38 AM

YO

mpt_1962 11-01-2007 10:32 AM

to port/polish 4v heads it will cost more. Installation will prolly cost more too. If you can, swing away from Patriot heads(because of the reputation being not so good) BUT i have also head people say they havent had problems with the "newer" heads. Like it has been suggested to you before, go with lmp or even vtengines.com. With ported heads and cams your looking at over 50hp increase easily. BUT you also have been given instructions on how to do it yourself or at least a reference, so that will save ALOT of money if you do it yourself.

03DSG 11-01-2007 11:03 AM

does anyone know if a company like VT would sell heads with the cams already installed with all new hardware?

r3dn3ck 11-01-2007 11:07 AM

for enough money I'm sure they'll find someone to lick your nuts.. call em.

Yeah, sorry, did the swap with the GT. Got the heads from R3dn3ck, they were PI heads he had P&P'd. Haven't had a chance to really drive the car, other issues cropped up and ended up getting a new short block as well.

Cutbacks... or is it... Downsizing...

mpt_1962 11-02-2007 02:44 AM

population control. He had MULTIPLE posts on the exact same subject and was a not so polite "person" with a comment he made.

2oo5GT 11-03-2007 05:24 PM

I think it's the way your read it, he could have meant one thing and everyone took as something else. say YO would hardly be a cause for being let go, but o well. I would call it cutbacks.

hehe, it wasn't the "YO" that got him booted, me thinks it was the racial references he used when describing how he creatively "rigged" mods and such, those posts were offensive and were deleted and thankfully, are not tolerated on this website.

mpt_1962 11-04-2007 03:01 AM

+1 oh well.

r3dn3ck 11-04-2007 10:27 AM

He was warned about continuing behavior that made it uncomfortable for more senior members to be around. He failed to heed the warning. Then he got a infraction for his failure. After I gave him his infraction he popped off at me in a PM and started the whole first amendment and free speech bullshit argument. I saw no need for him to continue to take up web space or be a racist asshat in a publicly accessible forum. I was supported in my decision by the rest of the mod staff that was active at the time. Slow2v was simply not our sort of people and I think the bulk of the member base would agree. (that's the Cliff's notes... there's more detail in there but that sums it up)

Note to those who would argue 1st amendment stuff about boards like ours:
It doesn't apply here. This is a private club where we can discriminate against anyone for any reason. The only free speech you get here is what the mods allow. We're pretty loose about most things but as all of you that haven't been ban.T know racist remarks, personal attacks and threats of any kind are not tolerated and as soon as we spot such problems you guys pretty much know what to expect.

I was disappointed by Slow's decision to be stupid and mouth off to all of us at once. I'm not sad to see him go.

mpt_1962 11-04-2007 11:30 AM

what was worse was bringing up his 1st amendment right to me(who is serving for him to have that right). Before it even made it to the moderators i asked him to refrain from such comments and STILL answered his questions that he posted about a few times. No big loss to the community overall, lol.

machnjo 11-04-2007 01:17 PM

Werd !!! Thats why I like this particular board. Mostly great technical info, and very little immature crap you see everywhere else.
