4.6 to 5.1 Stroker
 
finally saved up enough for a supercharger, but after lots of advise to forge the bottom end to prevent problems down the road i figured might as well hold off on the supercharger and get a stroker kit for a couple hundred more than just replacing the stock crank and connecting rods and have it stroked out. does anyone have experience with with this? any ideas on how much ill gain by increasing the displacement from 281-310?

just buying the stroker kit isnt gonna do you much good. you need balancing of parts, as well as machining the block and torque plate honing. also, the 5.1 kit from chp which i assume you are talking about uses a bore size that means scary thin walls for your iron block. i suggest going with a complete shortblock. however, if you want to do everything right the first time, your gonna spend some money. heres what my shortblock consists of

.020 over bore iron romeo block
CP pistons @ 9:1
manly h beam rods
cast gt crank
cobra oil pump
bilet oil pump gears
arp hardware
arp main studs
canton 7qt oil pan
canton windage tray
all balanced, assembled, etc

with shipping it was 4400$

if you dont wanna spend a lot, and want to boost, i suggest using your stock motor and keeping the boost 8psi or lower. also, use a good tuner. the stoker kits dont do much for these motors, the extra money can be put towards something else more efficiently.

theres a great machine shop near me that specializes in race engines and they said around 2000 for crank pistons rods and balancing but they havent done any late model mustangs mostly just 5.0s, so maybe going to 310ci would be too much and they just havent seen a 4.6 block yet. really no big gains with an overbore? thats disapointing. and the stock bottom end can hold up with forced induction? i want the power but its not worth it to me if im gonna risk breaking something i cant fix myself.

2000 for the balanced assembly your saying? thats not bad but theres more costs involved with preparing your block and assembling a motor.

the cost for the machining wouldnt be much more since the mechanic was my automotive teacher and they give discounts to students but ill go with the 6 psi vortech, that should be safe... now to search for a good price.
