4.10's making my auto shift too fast
 

after having 4.10s installed in my 2001 gt auto the transmission shifts out of 1st 2nd and 3rd around 2000rpms, before i can get any power to the wheels. i used my superchip tuner to raise the shift point to MAX in every transition but it made no difference. anybody have any idea on how to correct this, or ever heard of this happening?

Is this at full throttle?

i cant even get the pedal down far enough to get it at full throttle, i tried shifting it manually from 1-2-D and i was able to rev it up into the power band so it can get there just not on its own. when i punch it the shifting slows down like when youre driving a standard in fourth gear going 20mph.

Why cant you get the pedal to the floor?

well the pedal is to the floor but its in the wrong gear, its in third or overdrive when its around 20mph, so the speed slowly inches until it gets up to 30, it doesnt feel like full throttle since yesterday with stock gears it was a lot faster, even though it is at full throttle. sorry i shouldve have clearified that.

Where does the car shift at full throttle?

around 2000rpms, its not affected by how much gas i give it. with stock gears i could control when it shifted by giving more gas to keep it in the same gear but now i cant. its like the transmission is going as fast as it can to get into high gear.

its really weird i did alot of reading before getting these gears and never heard of this happening in any magazine or forum.

my local race shop installed them, they specialize in mustangs and have a really good reputation so im surprised this happened. im going to go back there tomorrow and see if theyll check it out.

did you use the tuner to correct your speedo. thats what sounds like your problem. on autos if your speedo isnt set by the right gear ratio your tranny will not shift right.

i corrected the speedometer and raised all the shift points to max. i just got back from the shop and they suggested disconnecting the computer for a half an hour then reconnecting it and driving manually with overdrive off for about 25 miles to let the computer re-learn how i drive... and if that didnt work go back and theyll try a custom chip thats more powerful than my regular superchips programmer.

I had similar trouble when I installed 4.30's my superchips programmer did not help much. I had mine corrected with a SCT tune.

I installed 4.10 gears in my 01 auto this past week and didn't have this problem. I did notice it upshifting quicker on light accel,but have no problem with it kicking down. I drove the car after the install without reprogramming and still didn't have the problem (forgot my programmer at home) and then corrected the speedo with my hypertech3 programmer when I got home. I had 3.73 gears before and the shifting is about the same other than now I run more rpms on the hwy (almost more than I like) 3000 rpms= 77 mph,before with the 3.73 I was at 87 mph at the same 3000 rpms. I may install 3.90 gears instead and split the difference. Good luck.

well im kinda getting used to the way my car drives with these new gears, especially since when im at wide open throttle it gets into the power band a lot quicker. im not going to get the custom tune until i have more done to my gt. i currently have fenderwell intake, 75mm TB, c&l plenum, SLP catted X, SLP loudmouth cat-back and superchip, so its not worth it yet.

superchips tuner sucks ass, maybe thats your problem?

definitely was NOT worth the price. i bought it a few months ago for the gear/speedometer correction and adjust the shift points. i didnt notice much of a HP gain as they advertise, i know i didnt get an additional 10% (from base that would be 26hp).

no, i havent been there yet but a friend of mine told me to check them out. i went to karls east coast speed.

yeah im going there wedneday fir my gear and pully install. they are right on the line of RI and Mass.

The Hypertech 3 also sucks for the mustang. I purchased mine because it was in stock at the auto parts store accross the street and I wanted to adjust speedo for gear swap. I installed their tune before the gear swap and didn't notice any seat of the pants difference,other than it will now ping on anything less than 92 octane. I would like to go to the track on a test and tune day and run the car with and without their tune and see if there is any difference.

if you do test the programmer at the track make sure you post the results, id like to see how much less than 10% hp it actually gives you.

I tested my superchips programer vs. a Steeda timing adjuster and was faster with the adjuster. Those programmers are crap other than changing the speedo.

Your PCM shifts your tranny based on 2 inputs, vehicle speed or rpm. Whichever one it gets to 1st. If your speedo is correct your shift points should be too. The only problems you should be having in a 99-newer car is possibly bumping the rev limiter because the car is accelerating so much faster. There is a delay in the time that your car is "told" to shift and when it actually shifts, with your acceleration being so much faster, but the delay being the same, sometimes you can bump the limiter. What you have going on sounds very odd to me.

I have never hit the limit im sure id hear the noise it makes. Turning off overdrive helps a little so ive been doing that to stay in 3rd all the time. Other than that gears are great, on the highway its alot faster and my miles per gallon didnt even go down that much like i was told they would.
