Know of any Cheaper Shortblocks?
 

When I come back from overseas, I should have a decent chunk saved up. However, I don't wanna blow all my hard earned Dollars on the engine alone. I got plans for some kind of forced induction, forged internals, Tranny, rearend. But I need to spend wisely. I've read of some fairly cheap shortblocks(281 and 302s) but I can only seem to find DSS and Livernois shortblocks. Too much moola.Iwas thinking under 3G's. I figure shortblock is the way too go because after teardown and build-up cost with a rotating assembly, it will be about the same. Plus Machining.

Any Ideas?

Having a built motor affordably is all relative. DSS is about as cheap as you can get and have a quck turn-around on your motor. DSS has mixed reviews. They made great pushrods, but apparently had some problems in the early days with the modulars.

There are LOTs of engine builders out there, so choose wisely. There is a great company in Ca. that builds mustang motors that came highly recomended to me, but at 1 am I can;t think of the name.

CHP... coast high performance. They've had a few glitched motors lately according to my tuner who's actually done the installs. Livernois is another good one.

oh and try and stay-away from "cheap" as Cheap engines usally don't last and break:shakeno:

I recommend Jason too. Dont go cheap or else youll end up spending more to get it fixed.

i would go with someone reputable...like livernois or steenracing. as a matter of fact when i do get money for my heads i will be getting them from steen. they are good ppl and do great work.

As someone who recently shopped for a motor and got a new on this past May, I found that most of the engines prices were pretty consistant. Plan on spending $5500 or so for your typical built 4.6 600 hp ish motor with custom heads and cams.

BTW, I ended up with a slightly used Saleen motor with 7500 miles on it. I was able to get it for $750, so I could not pass it up.

Steen is a new one for me. I'll check them out. Thanks for the advice guys. I don't wanna go "cheap" just cheaper. Maybe I'll just concentrate on the moto for now and spring for Paxton tuner kit later. I got a voice in my head saying "If you build the motor, and the forced induction will come."

just an FYI, Steen Racing does not just build big HP engines. they are a Full Service shop wth a dyno and Ed Clark of SCT doing the tuning. Steen also does trans work, installs gears, exhaust, suspension work, just about everything. I trust them 110% wth my stuff and there close to me and to you.
