Engine and tranny tolerances?
 

Can anyone please tell me where I can find out what the tolerances are for an ’02 Mustang GT, with the 4.6 V8 and Automatic trans/w overdrive. I would like to know how much horsepower and torque the engine and tranny can take before running into failure problems.

I know the T3650 transmission cant handle 502 ft lbs of trq lol....my boy lost 3rd gear on the dyno!

This is a bogus question really... don't get mad, keep reading.

There is no way to say that x horsepower level or x torque level WILL break a tranny or an engine and anything less than that won't. It's just not possible.

There are conventions which we've all learned by experience but there are enough edge cases that those numbers are relagated to being suggestions.

In general you should not run over 400rwhp/tq on the 4.6 2v GT motor until the bottom end is built to handle it with forged parts and all that jazz. The factory rating on the tranny is 360lbs of torque but that's engine tq and not at the rear wheels so you're looking at about 300-320rwtq as the maximum rating. In reality there are thousands of mustangs running around on T45, t5 and TR3650 trannies with tq numbers into the mid 400's.

It's best to decide how you'll use your car, what ultimate power level you'll need to use it that way with the greatest success and then pick the components that you'll need to make it reliable and appropriate to the use case.

The 4R70W trannie is quite strong and will handle 400hp/tq as well as a 3650 but it needs to be properly set up with added cooling, fluid capacity and proper internals for your use case.

Why not tell us what you have in mind as a goal and we'll do what we can to make a simple parts list that will hold the power and keep you driving home reliably.

I'm about about to post a pick on 450 lbs. of torque will do to a stock 2001 Auto tranny...they aint pretty...lol
