mechanic refuses to install headers

my mechanic told me that he refuses to install my headers for me because "they are illegal, and never fit the right way and cause problems to put on."

is this true? anyone have problems with certain headers? i have the BBK full length.

spike_africa 07-06-2006 08:28 PM

dookie2365 07-06-2006 08:29 PM

Jack The Ripper 07-06-2006 08:41 PM

he is just lazy, if he doesent want yer money go spend it elsewhere. he is full of ****.
as long as you keep yer cats(and in some places mufflers too) then it is totally legal.

dookie2365 07-06-2006 08:45 PM

thats what i said, besides, my dad is a cop and he didnt think that was true either.

NoKturnaL 07-07-2006 01:12 AM

FullThrottleStang 07-07-2006 02:33 AM

I had a shop tell me they wouldn't install an O/R H-pipe because it wasn't street legal! You just gotta check around!!

How is that crazy? Sounds about right to me.

Teal_Beast 07-07-2006 04:42 AM

yea lol o/r mid pipe is illeagle . . however i dont see any reason not to do it yourself so why even take it to a shop

Saleen S330 07-07-2006 05:07 AM

That's true, the offroad, hence the name "offroad use only" is illegal to install on your car. If that shop puts on the no cat H or X pipe they will get fined heavily if caught. For all they know, if they don't know you, you are someone seeing if they will install something illegal. but some shops, they don't give a crap to install it.
About the headers, that guy new how much pain in the ass they are and didn't want to do it. excuses, that's all it was.

Weels1 07-07-2006 06:19 AM

If I was you I'd look elsewhere for a REAL mechanic. Headers are a bitch to do thats for sure. On the otherhand do you wrench at all? You should think about doing them yourself. Just think of all the new tools, jackstands stuff like that you can buy with the money you would of put out for the install. Then the PRIDE:pepper: of doing it yourself. Then with the extra money take your wife/gf/mom out to a nice dinner for blowing a whole day doing them.:beerchug:

MattJ 07-07-2006 06:35 AM

He knows exactly what hes getting into and may have had troubles installing them previously. Id never be involved doing them again either. its a pain in the ass.
lol

The headers might be illegal. If they don't have an EGR tube then it's pretty much the same as putting on a mid pipe with no cats. Not to mention headers are a HUGE pain in the ass.

my mid pipe has cats though

r3dn3ck 07-07-2006 08:29 AM

it's illegal to install them at all in some states. California and I believe NY are really bad about it.

Yes, BBK are known to have some fitment issues. I know of a handful of sets around here that just wouldn't seal. They are a HUGE PITA to install but that's life.

Midpipes are illegal to replace in general because it is illegal to remove a properly functioning catalytic converter and aftermarket catalytic converters are not legal for installation in California on OBD II vehicles (some 1994 & 1995, and all 1996 and later vehicles). If you leave the stock cats in place they don't seem to mind but when has that ever been an option hahha.

dookie2365 07-07-2006 08:31 AM

yea i live in new york though

r3dn3ck 07-07-2006 08:33 AM

then your mechanic is just covering his butt and being lazy. go to the next guy.

dookie2365 07-07-2006 08:33 AM
