X Pipe question....

do most brands of X pipes all pretty much sound the same?

I.E. found a good deal (cheap) on a BBK O/R X ..worth it???

madmatt 10-13-2004 08:33 PM

NO! Stay away from the bbk...It sounds like a bunch of marbles vibrating around under your car. With the SLP, Id have to say either get the SLP Pipe, or something like the MT pipe or UPR.

Stanger35thGT 10-13-2004 08:38 PM

yea im not too fond of BBK .. its just the price ($65) got me...lol

ill find something else more suitable

thanks

njblackstang 10-13-2004 09:00 PM

I have a 99gt too and have the upr o/r x. its really loud, but the car just sreams at WOT. go for it.

decoy562 10-14-2004 08:22 AM

Get the mustangtuning X-pipe, it is a better design.

I agree. Just say no to the bbk x-pipe. BBK makes other fine products, but the way they form the x just doesn't sound the same as the SLP, MT, UPR, Dr. Gas...

Get a mac o/r H and you'll be set!

WaterDR 10-14-2004 07:10 PM

It is very important that you select the X pipe based on the catback that you have. The different combos sound very different from eachother. I am NOT a fan of mixing brands of X Pipes and Catbacks unless you have heard them together or have gotten some good advice from someone.

Stanger35thGT 10-14-2004 07:14 PM

well a SLP O/R X is pretty expensive...

or at least more than i was willing to pay for a midpipe..

and i havent seen an O/R X made by SLP, its either w/ cats or w/ racepipes...unless racepipes is the same as O/R

hmm
i was thinkin bassani or MAC ...

madmatt 10-14-2004 07:35 PM

Race pipes are the same as O/R, you can just switch them in and out for whenever you go to the track and such. It would probably be EXTREMELY loud too.

Stanger35thGT 10-14-2004 07:44 PM

what do you mean switch "them" out?

like, you can switch out between cats, and race pipes....

im lookin at one here, says it has clamps that you can un-do and change out the cats to race pipes or vice versa....

WaterDR 10-14-2004 08:03 PM

That's the one! You can add the cats and then take them off....right at the track. Yet, another reason why SLP is the tits.

Stanger35thGT 10-14-2004 08:05 PM

alright...well

i dont like that price...lol...maybe ill stick with something cheaper and used....

WaterDR 10-15-2004 01:41 AM

Question: Why do you think that SLP is Pricey? They are in the same range as all others with cats especially if you consider that it is stainless. The MT X pipes are about the best out there for the lowest price, but I think a $100 + more for stainless is normal.

Buy used is always a potentially good option and may work out for you. Takes a little time to find the right one and fun to search.

madmatt 10-15-2004 05:00 AM

Exactly, I mean, I know I wouldnt want to spend 350 bucks on a catted pipe, but at the same time, I hear that one, the SLP stuff sounds best when used in conjunction with each other, and two, its fully stainless. I havent heard the SLP catback with any other midpipe so I cant really recommend anything. You could always just try the MT pipe, and of course, then you would have to post sound clips... :D

The SLP X-pipe is great because of its versatility. If you were to buy the full assembly catted X-pipe, you could be street legal with the cats, remove them to put the race pipes in for more power and sound, and also, its as simple as taking off the pipes before the cats to have a direct bolt up job to the SLP long tube headers if you wanted to go that way in the future. We now carry the Race Pipes so you can have the whole SLP setup.

madmatt 10-15-2004 12:22 PM

Slp was very smart to do their X pipe that way. Very quick change friendly.

mike sweeney 10-15-2004 06:15 PM

I just ordered the SLP catted X-pipe because of its quality and versatility. It gives me the options of running cats, or no cats, any short tube header, or SLP long tube headers without buying a new x-pipe or cutting and modifying one. Its Stainless construction and quality band clams will give it a long service life. Always remember If you buy a cheap pipe you are getting cheap quality.

I think that you make good points about your choice. I think I'm going to go that route myself. Besides, I should match up my cat-back anyway, right?

Stanger35thGT 10-16-2004 08:57 AM

so wait, if you were to order the full assembly with race pipes.. does this mean you get a pair of cats AND the race pipes with the package, so you can change them out....or do you have to buy either the race pipes or cats separate??

Jeremy 10-16-2004 09:39 AM

You buy the X pipe with cats. The race pipes don't come with the X pipe. But if you buy both you can go without the cats, and still put them on when you need them. Look at the MT site and you will see the race pipes are no for sale.

Had the same question myself. The catted X pipe does not come with the race pipes. The race pipes are sold seperately by Mustang Tuning (now). Still a helluva deal!

mike sweeney 10-16-2004 03:46 PM

I ordered My SLP X-pipe with the cats, I figured I could have a local exhaust shop make me a couple of race pipes since they dont involve any bends. I should be able to get them made for $10-$15 Dollars :D

Jeremy 10-17-2004 08:22 AM

Just give me a paper towel holder and some tape and I will make you a pair for $4 :)

Just remember that the race pipes have the stepped cut on both sides so that you can remove them easier. I went with the SLP setup with the race pipes option on my Cobra. With the addition of the Steeda catback, the sound is incredible. Installation was not exactly fun, but I was able to do it without a lift and just a pair of ramps. Now its time for the track again! :D

Stanger35thGT 10-18-2004 03:59 PM

i think i might go with the UPR O/R X...

affordable , and ive heard some good things about em..

Scott02 10-18-2004 05:12 PM

What about the MT o/r X pipe? How good is it, free shipping. ;)

Stanger35thGT 10-18-2004 05:36 PM

yess i saw that....BUT does the MT X fit automatic transmissions?

EDIT: I emailed MT and they said that the make the pipes after they are ordered so if i just put in that i need it made for automatic transmissions , they should be able to make it properly fit for my car....lets hope MT is loyal to their words....i dont want to get something that wont work...otherwise...well yea

RedSilver88 10-20-2004 12:22 AM

My vote is Mac Prochamber :D :D :D

Stanger35thGT 10-20-2004 08:08 PM
