Time to get serious

:devil2: Ok, I'm planning on getting some Patriot Heads, and a set of Comp Cams. I'm pretty green when it comes to this stuff, so any recommendations would be great. I need some decent HP, along with drivability so I'm wondering what would be the best setup to go along with the mods I already have...

Patriot Stage 2 heads and 262 comp cams....

RedFirevert04GT 06-06-2006 01:04 PM

You may want to re-think the brand of head you've picked. I've not heard the greatest things about Patriot over the past couple years. I have heard nothing but good stuff about Fox Lake and VT though.

Saleen S330 06-06-2006 01:10 PM

I LOVE my stage 2 patriot heads so far.

Exactly. A guy in my local club had those heads. The shop loved those heads, then they dropped a valve. He wont sell them anymore. There are countless other problems with those heads also. Id look into VT, MPH, or Steen Racing heads. As for cams, Comps are okay, but watch out for PTV issues. Again Id look into VT or custom cams from MPH. These are two things you dont want to go cheap on.

Saleen S330 06-06-2006 03:15 PM

if you stay with .500in lift you won't run into PTV problems, the bigger .550..there's a chance of PTV.

If i drop a valve, i will Shet in my pants, that would suck.

r3dn3ck 06-06-2006 03:47 PM

From what I'm hearing currently after looking hard at patriot heads, they were having some fairly irritating quality issues but those have been largely worked out. Even if you do drop a valve, that's more a problem with the retainers and locks and not the head itself. They're OEM heads. They've just been hogged out and polished up a bit. If you get a bad lock, you get a bad lock and some bad luck. Make sure you pop for good retainers and locks.

As for comp cams, stay reasonable on your cam selection and it shouldn't be a problem. Go using 274's on a unprepared motor and you've got a shot at PTV. 268's are a good streetable cam with a nice power boost and noone that I've ever heard of has had PTV on them.

I got my assembled and they come with titanium retainers, .600" springs, SS valves with 5 angle valve job, some info on how they flow... show's lift, then intake, then exhaust

Those are pretty good flow #'s. Any idea how much you gained from them? I think the best choices are VT stage 2 heads and cams or MPH stage 2.5 heads with some custom cams from Tim. Now the stuff from Tim is a little more expensive, but you get what you pay for. Here are the flow #'s on the MPH 2.5 heads.

.050 28 26
.100 53 52
.150 82 79

csledd 06-06-2006 07:07 PM

personally I'd go with VT Stage 2's (go figure) and some VT, MPH, or Foxlake heads :)

3V2000GT 06-06-2006 07:17 PM

Go with livernois ported heads

255 cfm intake @ .600
208 exhaust @ .600

but nothing compared to my 3v livernois cnc ported heads
301 cfm intake @ .600 lift
216 exhaust @ .600 lift

Dumb Question

Not to be a butt, but why are you doing this instead of a blower? Or is that in your future?

03gtmustang 06-06-2006 10:20 PM

NA cars can run just as fast as blown cars.

yep thats true, there are cars with 250-260 rwhp running 12.5's where as some blown cars with 400rwhp running that or worse or not too much better

SpeedNovations 06-07-2006 02:14 AM

No Blower anytime soon. Nitrous a strong possibility in the near future. Will I have to re-tune my computer after the heads and cams??

Yes you will need a retune for the heads and cams and then another one for the nitrous.

r3dn3ck 06-07-2006 08:41 AM

those MPH 2.5 heads seem like a race oriented head. You'll probably lose low end tq, shift the power band out toward 65-6800rpm and maybe lose some idle quality. Notice how the 550 and 500 lift intake flow #'s are the same... says to me it's been maxed out, especially since the 600 lift isn't markedly better (2cfm). That's reinforced by the 400 lift flowing over 200. I'd probably opt for a less radically ported head for street use. Those are badazz for race duty though.

That's what i was thinking, alittle to radical heads there.

RedFirevert04GT 06-07-2006 09:19 AM

I think the biggest problem Patriot was having with the heads were the valve guides they were using.

yes they can, but spending more money and getting a worse tq curve.

when I put just my cams in my old tune was so off it barely would idle, most of the time after awhile it just died. that's one reason you need a tune, the other reason would be to get your a/f ratio correct!

MM&FF used the PP heads on Project Ice Box. They never mentioned any problems...

I am purchasing their "stage II" heads from RPM along with Comp 270's... I'll be doing the install myself(along with SLP LT's and Catted X while I'm in there) and then the whole thing is going to be tuned by MileHIDyno in Denver (suburb actually)... I'll let you know how it goes....

I don't expect any problems...

caballo 06-07-2006 08:01 PM

And yes a KB is planned for this fall...

Doesnt take more money. I ran 12.76 with full exhaust, gears, t/b plenum, stock suspension except for eibach pro kit which actually hurt my times, MM lca's, VT stage 2 cams, and a 3500 stall which isnt even working right.

I havent herd any real negative stuff against Patriot heads till now? but you know Milehidyno is a VT dealer too! and btw Scott & Joe are awesome they tuned my car :shifty:
