160 thermo

would a 160 thermostat do me any good with my mods, or not? just wondering...

jjtgiants 05-26-2006 03:31 PM

with a 160* thermo your car will most likely not reach the "warmed up" temp of 178*... so the EEC will keep the engine running rich. Maybe some tuning could fix that, but a 160* in my opinion is to cold. If you want to go with anything it should be a 180*, but your stock thermo is probably just fine. I actually think modular engines run better hot.... I'm no expert and I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Dont use the 160 its not needed at all. Lowering your operating temp wont make more power. I would drop in a 180* to help keep the car cooler if your using a power adder or in hot climates like here in Florida.

i put a 180 in and my cars temp stays reallll real low

I wouldn't worry with your thermostat at all unless you go to some type of power adder. a large shot of N2O I would go with a 180 and anything over 8psi boost I would do a 160. But unless you're forcing more air or N2O in, leave it be.

ok cool, thanks

I already made the mistake of buying the 160 thermostat, but I did get a sct tune from mustang tuning, will this keep my engine from running rich?

spike_africa 05-27-2006 07:04 PM

its gonna run very very cold for no reason.

98-GT 05-30-2006 11:33 AM

but will my xcalibrator 2 tune stop it from running rich?

spike_africa 05-30-2006 12:43 PM

unless you play with the tune, nope. If you have plans of being supercharged soon dont worry the blower will make more heat and this will help bleed it off. But its just to cold for a n/a motor, its not needed.

Have you installed the 160F thermostat? If not then just don't put it in.

SLP sent me a 160 with my Performance pac,(slponline.com) I still remember from the old 5.0L days and the EECiv system that anything below 180 will keep the car in a rich (choke ) mode. I called SLP and they said that with the LT headers you want to lower the intake temp as low as you can to keep from burning valves and the 160 would be fine, thay also said with the use of the new comp OBD2 in the Mustang that it would not run rich but stay around 175-185 deg. Therm start to open at the rated temp but take 15-20 deg to become fully open(160 will run open @175). I installed the 160 and have no problems, it's been in for about 6500 miles. Only trouble is in winter, only a few weeks here in FL, the heater is not so hot. My cars been on a A/F meter and runs just fine. Last tune was done with my gear install a week ago.
