Windage Tray

Anyone know how hard it is to install a windage tray?

4.6 Love 05-13-2006 12:34 PM

Why do you need one?

Fat Lard 05-13-2006 01:29 PM

No clue. But nice car.

TEXASPAUL 05-13-2006 01:38 PM

in order to install the windage tray the motor needs to be lifted up or your K dropped. Not worth the trouble for the mods you hae done.

I agree. You wil have to raise the motor or drop the K memeber. Also it goes inbetween the block and oil pan and it keeps oil off of the crank, not bigger oil pan. Thus it reduces the parasitic drag that happens when oil is clinging onto the crank = alittle more horsepower.
The 5.0 guys, if they know this trick, would go to the track and drain out almost 3 quarts of their oil, leaving 2 quarts, so there would be less drag on the crank, but risky. But...the 4.6's or 5.4's can NOT do that trick. Alot of our oil goes top side to the heads, so usually the bottom end has enough to do, but if it didn't, the motor would seize. Also that's why it's risky to do 130 MPH sometimes. lol like i've done.

Im about to take my headers back off to wrap them. They are long tubes so I will have to remove the K-Member.

I just purchased cams and a 150 wet shot. If anything I dont want my motor to blow. Its just for reinsurance. Plus later on down the road I want to slap a twin turbo on.

It claims to add 10HP by making the oil not cling to the crank, just another bolt on to add to the list.

windage trays are best left to big swing cranks and high winding motors. Bigger throws on the crank (bigger stroke) means more wind blowing oil around, so a tray helps and restores some HP. On high winding motors the same becomes true because of RPM rather than throw distance.

They usually connect to the same bolts that hold the mains down in at least one spot so install may involve re-torquing the mains. Save it for when you blow your motor and start the build on your next one.

I'm not going to run a windage tray in mine since MPH owner tlod me I don't need it with my motor. I'm running the street/strip canton 7qt oil pan and it has the sump and a sort of windage tray keeping the oil at the bottom near the pick-up. It's not worth the hassle at all with having to drop the k or raising the motor. Just for a windage tray. Why get the turbo's before getting the motor built? If I was to do this supercharger route again I would hae just bought the built motor then got the blower after. With supporting mods and getting a tune on a fresh engine will net some good gains then later add the turbo. Just some advice.

Well the turbos would come after the Stroker kit and new heads.

Would it make sense to put in a windage tray when I do my LT headers?

If you dont need one, then no.

Bwhipple 03-09-2007 11:53 AM

Well I saw that all the 2000 cobra R were using them but I assume that was because of the longer stroke of the 5.4. I was wondering if it would have any benefit at all. While I have the k off, I should do what I can since I dont plan on taking it back off anytime soon.

I think it takes alot more than just that.
