What the hell is this noise?

I recently have a chirping...grinding sound that I believe is coming somewhere from the rear of my car. I hear it all the time, when I accelerate and when I'm coasting off the gas.Its really damn loud at 2k rpms. It doesn't make the noise at idle, and it goes completely away when I press in the clutch. Anybody have any wild ideas as to what might be wrong with my ride?

If you push in the clutch and it goes away, it almost sounds like the throw out bearing.

SpeedNovations 04-05-2006 02:40 AM

a bearing? cool, that doesn't sound too expensive. I just hope it isn't major tranny problems.

UnNoticed46 04-05-2006 08:44 AM

Any possibility its the rear U Joint? Somebody I know suggested it. Just want your all's opinion...

Shambles 04-09-2006 09:43 PM

Does it do it at startup, or just when you are speeding up and slowing down? What about when you are at idle? Do you still hear the noise?

Any recent mods back there?

Badfish 04-10-2006 12:20 AM

either the TOB or your gears

SpeedNovations 04-10-2006 01:37 AM

yeah, when I speed up and slow down. I thought it went away when I press the clutch, but a closer listen I found out it just quiets up a bit. And no it doesn't make the noise at all at idle.

Saleen S330 04-10-2006 04:41 AM

If it makes a grinding noise when you speed up and the faster you go the crappier it sounds, then yeah it sounds like it could be the u joint, i've had that happen to me, that you might want to check asap. When i took my driveshaft down and looked at the slip yoke, the u joint just fell out and i've always had to use a vise to get them out. so that was scary. Make sure to change both out, U joints are cheap. If not the u joints, then you might have to take a look at your rearend gears and hopefully it's not the gears.

Definately check that driveshaft and U-Joints. If it cant be heard when you are at idle then I have a hunch that might be it.

I'm kinda a mechanical novice at this car stuff, but if it is the gears... what's causing the noise? I've heard of noisy gears when you swap them out for aftermarket ones.... but I've had my 3.73's for a little over 2 years and I've never heard a peep out of them until now. Wear and tear I suppose?

Shambles 04-10-2006 02:14 PM

Could be your bearings in your rear end.

Justin99gtconv 04-10-2006 02:54 PM

Had a similar problem in the past and it was wheel bearings

oh man, sounds like something my brother said recently. My dad has been a lil stressed out recently as my grandfather is on his last legs as it were. My older brother now a sophomore in college was home for the weekend with his silver '01 GT vert, getting his supercharger installed etc. He called my dad and said 'Dad, i just got my car back from the shop, and their is this weird noise coming out from under my car... OH WAIT thats the supercharger!' oh man my dad though it was funny but it stressed him out a lil, lol
My bro got a kenne bell twin screw supercharger... oh balls is it fast now and he runs only 6lbs of boost, their lowest boost pulley i believe... but its so smooth, i still can't get that sound out of my head after driving in it... (not driving it, heaven forbid) Oh well, i am still gettign used to the gobs of power my 03 GT has over my old six!
