Engine Working Harder with exhaust system???

My dad is being an *** about buying me an exhayst system for Christmas. Its the only thing i have on my list that i really want. He claims that a O/R h-pipe and a dual exhaust will make the engine work harder and waste more gas (and its not like my car is a gas guzzler its a V6). Now im pretty sure this isnt true but can somebody back me up on this so i can tell him that an exhaust system does increase performance and sound while saving gas.

it shouldnt kill ur gas....just make sure u get a way to eliminate the CEL when u go off/road

That's dumb. Tell him to use common since. Show him this post also. With opening up the pipes it makes it easier on the engine. For example. Close your hand in a ball and try to stick your fingers in your hand. Pretty hard huh? Now open your hand some stick your finger in it now. Alot easier it is. Less pressure to push out with wider pipes.

My dad is actually get a CAI and cat back exhaust for his 2001 Dodge Dakota SLT because it will give him better gas mileage. I think I'm going to believe a 53 year old who can completely build a car without a manual.

Im just gunna leave my CEL on cuz its always on anyways. We've taken it into my friends dads auto shop and had all the codes fixed and everything and it just stays on, even disconnected the battery

Why don't you buy it yourself? Either way no it will not make the engine work harder. Oh and prepare yourself because our sixers sound like **** without cats :p

He doesn't want to buy it, he doesn't have to have a good reason.

Well, that seems like the real reason to me. When you have a house, a mortgage, a 401k, a wife, and kids then ........you still can't get want you want. See what you have to look forward to?

V6 cars sound like ass without cats to me. Just get a muffler welded in to stock exhaust system or a catback if you must.
