my search for a new car has shifted

im looking for a LITTLE more power, so im looking to trade in my 02 v6 mustang which is a beautiful car, yet very weak, for an 03-04 cobra. originally i was looking at this 01 cobra which i could just trade my car for and keep my payments the same, however im becoming a little optimistic and after searching autotrader ive decided im going to look for an 03-04 cobra in the mid to low 20's. with an extra 2 grand down it would only up my payments (which are the minimum) 10 dollars a month

is that a realistic possibility? should i wait? i was thinking feb is a perfect month to buy since its so slow for the dealers. any opinions?
thanks

i would get a gt...i too was looking at an 03 cobra before i bought my gt....my if my car payments didnt kill me...it was the insurance....and i noticed that u were 17 (2 months younger than me) insurance will kill you....now dont get me wrong....cobras are nice and all..but think about it...ull be going to college(hopefully) and the cobra will be sitting and no pocket change....but if u got a gt...itll be hell of a lot faster then ur 6er w/ pocket change....

unless u have the funds, i would go for a gt....work ur way up in the power...dont jump from slow to really fast....ease into it (i had a 92 taurus before the stang..lemme tell ya...by the time i got to 60 in my taurus....id be up to 110mph in my stang....

my $.02

Yeah, I would have to agree. Make sure that you leave yourself money in college.

also, call your insurance company and find out what each car will cost you.

if its under ur name but in ur parents policy...gt could range from 200-400 and the cobra can range from 300-500...(those are the quotes for statefarm)

but again...u can always have ur parents put u under the crappiest car in ur family and only pay 80 a month like me :D(no car payments are coool too)

Ok, we have Nationwide as of now. I'm 17 with a 1999 Mustang GT 5spd. Insurance would be in the 200-300 range if I was on my own policy but I'm setup under my parents name and it's 140 a month. Another little bonus Nationwide offers and alot of other insurance companies offer is a grade discount. If you get A,B Honor Roll then will drop some off your payments. In Nationwides case they will drop my payments from 140 to 110 a month. Just think about it man, 140 a month is alot for a 17 year old who only makes about 7.00 per hour which is typical along with car payments which are 135 a month in my case. Another bonus to this is that most insurance companies will offer is modification coverage; Nationwide charges an extra $10 a month but they will cover every modification you put on your as long as you tell them about each modification. Don't forget gas, I can guarantee that you will spend at least $50 in gas a week if you have a typical teenager life.

I think a GT is a much wiser decision or atleast an older Cobra.

If your 17, the insurance will kill you with the cobra unless you put it under your parents name..My dad owns his own business which forces him to have several cars and trucks and my insurance was under his business when i was 17 and i hardly payed anything for insurance..And yea if you have good grades give them to your insurance company. My sister did that and got a good discount

Agree w/ everyone above. Plus, your not gonna find a decent 03-04 Cobra for under $26K. If the price is lower than that, its a good bet the car has been thrashed.

Grimmz 11-29-2005 07:50 AM

dude be carefull with those minimum payments, if your smarter you'll pay as much as you can every month, otherwise you could pay up to twice the original price...minimum payments are what they want you to pay to get you into debt.

ShadowsGT you said that most companies offer a modification coverage? I'm just curious, I would definately do it if it's only 10 bux a month. My last car was totalled and i got screwed with my aftermarket stuff. Anyone know what the mod coverage is for State Farm?

jjtgiants 11-29-2005 10:31 AM

Yeah, you won't be able to find a 03/04 Cobra for under $26-27 unless it's trashed and most people that buy a Cobra don't trash them. I would highly recommend a GT before stepping up to a Cobra...no offense, but especially since your only 17......I know every person has a different level of maturity, and you seem like you have your stuff together, but a 17 year old with 390hp scares me a bit. Sorry, I'm sounding like the old 28 year old.

When I sold my 03 GT and got the Mach my insurance went up $150 a year and I have never been in an accident.....my last ticket was 10 years ago, so keep that cost in mind.

All you have to decide is where your priorities are then decide what you want to do. :)

good point, thanks guys... maybe an nice new dream car cobra will have to wait until after college  i tihnk il still look for a 99-01 cobra, and have my parents which is what happens now, be listed on my car for insurance and me on my dads civic, it saves a boat load of cash. the dealer has the 01 cobra with 48,000 miles, bone stock listed at 19,999... however KBB and everyone has said thats too much, what do you guys think? what price should i be looking to pay?
thanks

PureStang 11-29-2005 01:01 PM

would deffinatly not pay that much money for an 01 cobra....if u want to pay that much go for a mach 1.........look at cars.com or autotrader.com and look for other cars in ur area...

whitethunder46 11-29-2005 01:13 PM

I would agree with just getting a GT. Much less and you can put a blower on it, and it will beat Cobras. Make it a sleeper. BTW I got my 2001 GT for 11,250 with 37K miles on it. Just have patience, good luck.
