I might be getting laid off

I have been working at the Dearborn Stamping Plant for 12 years and i have never been laid off. Now because of drastic cut backs and cost saving measures i might be laid off for 4 months. I have been very optimistic and havent paid attention to the rumors because when you work in the plant thats all you hear(rumors). I know to some of you, you are saying 4 months aint nothing at least you are getting unemployment. A layoff with my senoirity date is a prelude to a terminal one.

I plan on making a couple of more MT purchases but that will be it until i find out how my future is going to be looking with Ford Motor Co.

Just had to vent.

shad0ws 11-24-2005 11:57 AM

Sucks man, hope everything goes your way.

Badfish 11-24-2005 11:58 AM

stanger00 11-24-2005 12:06 PM

MattJ 11-24-2005 12:22 PM

Sorry to hear that. we all hope everything works out for you.

madmatt 11-24-2005 12:30 PM

Sorry to hear, hope it all works out for you.

rebelyell 11-24-2005 03:21 PM

I know your feelings bro. the plant I work at is major supplier for the big 3. Ford is our biggest customer. So when you guys have any trouble like that it trickles down to us suppliers. we already took a major workforce cut. Then they bring in temp agencies to cover for line workers. The temps only make 6 to 6.25 an hour so you can imagine what kind of work you get out of them. Hope things get straight or your sake and mine. GL :(

Jack The Ripper 11-24-2005 03:23 PM

Good luck bro. At least there is a possibility of them bringing you back. I'd definatly start seeking employment elsewhere though.
In the telecom world, a layoff is always a terminal one, once they start hiring again, they refuse to hire any of the layoffs.

WaterDR 11-24-2005 05:02 PM

Dude that sucks. The automotive industry in a real world of hurt and they have no one to blame but themselves. If you ask me, the company excutives all need to get fired because they have really let down their employees.

Ford has been plummeting. Falling behind Toyota this year and now Toyota will jump ahead of a near bankrupt GM in 2006 making them the #1 car producer in the world.

It is had to make money on a car when they are selling for 20% off list and the manufactures have to pay $2000 per car just to cover retiree benefits. Toyota on the other hand, does not have this problem.

I wish you the best. It is best for all of us if you can stay employed because it means that everything is healthier.

dsdaddy 11-24-2005 05:26 PM

Sorry to hear that...wish you the best of luck in either keeping your job or finding a better one!!!

So true that. The execs at the automakers are the ones who make the big bucks and get Huge bonuses. Then they want to cut the workforce and layoff blue collars. At least Ford is going the other route by laying off 400 white collars by next year. My company laid off both white and blue collars. And it caused more stress than you can imagine. My new boss ( my old boss got canned in Aug.) is one nervous wreck and he don't mind taking it out on me. They doubled the work load on eveyone that survived the rounds aof layoffs. I now run 4 different depts. (I'm a mechanic) But now I have to be line leader, stock selector, mechanic, I'm spread out thin but I'm good at my job. 26 years of factory work taught me alot. But from what I hear lately things won't ever be peaches and cream again. We all will suffer when the domestic auto industry goes down.

Everyone should read your comments and then ask yourself this question:

How are these lay-offs going to result in making a better product for the customer?

It won't. We already see a huge increase in returned products we shipped. Why? Stupid mistakes, Mislabeled filters, BAD filters that didn't get caught because our QC is understaffed, Even boxes with NO filter at all in it. Quality will get worse. We got people running assembly lines who have absolutely no business in an automotive parts factory. Temp workers just plain don't give a chit. And I personally hate that situation. At least at my end of the operation my parts are good, if they aint I gid rid of the one who don't give a chit. Enuff said about this from me.. Darn it I'm off for 3 more days. Work taking a back seat till monday.. Thanks for letting me grumble, I needed that. I can't say these things at work or I'll have a big ole target on my back. :D

They are probably banking on the idea if they **** can a bunch of workers that they will still be financially able to make the products in the first place.

The biggest problem i have with layoffs?

The average high level manager makes 6 figures and some very impressive bonuses. The highballer execs make migh 6'figures and into the millions. Thier bonuses are freakin outrageous.

Ive never understood the justification of it and how these people can sleep at night.

Option 1.
Lose the corperate bonus. As if 900,000 a year isnt enough. Save millions of dollars by suspending corperate bonuses for 1 year. I mean really, how many houses in Aspen or Vail do we need?

Option 2,
Lay off 100 workers, let them go unemployed, possible default on thier morgage, lose thier vehicals, go bankrupt, force them to move into a crap neighborhood where little joey will learn how to rob liquerstores and rape little girls while innocent little suzie will end up spending her 16th birthday blowing addicts at the local truckstop hoping to score a bag of meth.... and KEEP the executive bonuses!

Hey, whats another druggie in the world huh? I need that 42 foot yacht, now THAT is important.

Option 2 it is!!!!!!!

The higher you get the less human you are. Not that all corperate monkeys are like that, but the scenario above is all too common.

Jack The Ripper 11-24-2005 06:13 PM

You sir hit the nail on the head. Give me just 1 years salary of a ceo and i could quit work and live like a king. I don't need a house in 3 or 4 different area codes. Geez. A vacation Home worth 1,000,000? Please.. Too much greed. And thanks for the compliment on my sig. I worked really hard to make her look good. Plus I keep her clean. And i finally found a good angle for a pic. after a few hundred snapshots. LOL, :D

WaterDR 11-24-2005 06:47 PM

I have no problem with someone making a good buck. Fact is, there needs to be something to shoot for in life. That is what makes America great. Also, people for the most part are victims of their own decisions. If a guy decides to bust his arse in HS, sweat it out in college, save for his future, takes risks, and help his company succeed, he deserves to get paid.

The thing is though, high level managers should be more loyal to their employees who count on them rather then just trying to make the stockholders rich. That is the #1 problem with big business. The way teh system works, a CEO cares more about the stock price then being responsible for a worker and his family. That is wrong!

My solution? Make employees highly vested in the companies they work for. Companies need to be employee owned. That way all of these problems are prevented. This prevents short-term thinking and when you are forced to make drastic lay-offs to raise the stock price, the employees who are let go, reep the rewards.

It's actually a mustang hood stripe. But it looks similar to a mach 1 stripe without the pin stripe border.
