NBA dress code

I think that this dress code is dumb. 80% of the NBA is Black players. And now the NBA forced a dress code that will limit how players express them selfs by the way they dress while not playing. NBA says they want to clean up the appearence of players.
A few players are upset and say this is a sort of a racist move. (AND I TOTALLY AGREE)

look at hockey...
Hockey players can literaly kick teh crap outa each other while on the ice for MINUTES before its broken up. I know this has nothing to do with a dress code..but i sure as hell can GUARANTEE if the NHL was with 80% black players..they would not allow the fights AT ALL...how about that? little kids can see that ...then what do u think?

it just surprises me that a major sport would do that...and what do ya know? its the NBA that does it with alot of blacks.

whats your thoughts.

stang00 10-25-2005 04:43 PM

i guarantee all of them protest think about it if they all protest they have to change it or there will be no nba

MineralGT 10-25-2005 04:44 PM

Dress codes are stupid anyway...maybe at some scholls it's ok but when your a damn adult and people try to tell you what you can and can't wear, I think that's just retarded.

FritoBandito 10-25-2005 04:54 PM

As long as sports figures are not bangin hookers or strippers on a party boat (sorry minnesota fans), or snortin coke, or beating their wives they should be able to do whatever they want. Just represent the league in a positive manner and set good examples for the kids that watch them play.

WaterDR 10-25-2005 04:59 PM

All I can say is "It's about dam time." I think this is a great idea.

There is a time and a place for dressing the way you want. For example, Indian Doctors do not wear turbins when they are in surgery. Shorts and T-shirts are generally not appropriate at a funeral. I applaud the NBA for doing this and if the players don't like it...they can just get a real job.

BeatTheBrat94 10-25-2005 05:06 PM

I 100% agree with the dress code idea. They are a professional business. Yes, it is a sport. However, they are the professionals, the cream of the crop. And as such they do more than just run up and down the court with a ball. They represent, in essense, a firm, a corporation. This is a way to show respect for that. With about 99% of all jobs out there, you have a dress code you must follow, correct? And while they may not be on court in their uniforms, this provides them with the opportunity for far more respectable images.

Jack The Ripper 10-25-2005 05:24 PM

Ive never been a fan of dress codes, however, i really dont understand how you can call a dress code racist.

The NBA probably doesent want a image that denotes criminals, Lets be honest here, a lot of the fasion worn by off game NBA players is the typical style seen by rappers who rap about crime, killing, drugs, and bitches all day long(yes i know not all rappers rap about that, and yes i do listen to a lot of rap myself). I wouldnt blame the NBA if they want to distance themselves from that image. And that isnt racist, because shoes and clothes have no race. To attribute race to objects is nothing more than racism itself and does nothing to help break down the walls of prejudice. Thats like saying it sis OUR music, OUR clothes, OUR lifestyle. Wake up, none of that belongs to anyone, do claim it does just keeps groups like the KKK in business. We are all humans, letting something so stupid like the pigment of skin denote credible ownership of an idea or concept is absolutly rediculous and it causes more harm than good.

I dont wanna hear any of that "That is who we are" nonsence either, people are not thier clothes. As far as saying it is a "Heritage" thing, i dont see the few remaining african tribes sporting lugz, fubu, and H2s with 24in shoes.

As for comparing to NHL, it is apples and oranges. Its like getting on Qwest because MCI cancells the xmas bonus. different organizations, different companys, different rules for each. The NHL and NBA are in no way affiliated whatsoever. So i fail to see the reference there. If they were both owned by the same big company, then i could understand referring to hockey.

Then again, aside from the fighting of hockey, when you see these guys on the street they look like yer average joe, they look like your neighbor, they dont look like 50cent or Tupac smokin a blunt and staring you down.

I have to agree with MT #1, these people live a very blessed life of opportunity. Sure, for some of them it wasnt easy, but that is the same for everyone in life. My life wasnt easy, a lot of peoples lifes were not easy.

They sit thier with thier multimillion dollar contract then whine like spoiled children when something doesent go its way. If the NBA wants to clean thier image i applaud them for thier decision. I think there is probably a better way, but if yer gonna sit there on a buttload of cash to do something you LOVE doing, have the nice cars, the nice houses, and actually complain that the MBA wants to sharpen thier image, i tell those guys to go f**k themselves with the diamond encrusted golden rod that i could never afford.

It isnt racist, they are trying to change thier image. There is a big difference there, and i dont accept the race card as the problem here.

Did MJ look like a thug? how about tiger woods? No. Ant it isnt cause they sold out, they just never really wanted to look like a gangsta.

All this black vs white is crap. Were all people. Aint no difference in people but thier pigment. anyone who says otherwise is a racist themselves be they Black, White, or even freakin pokadot.

Dressing decenty should never be viewed as being racist. What has the stupid world come to when someone says "hey, you need a shirt and a tie" and someone thinks that is being racist.

On another note, the NFL needs to get rid of all these stupid end-zone antics. This is just one more reason why I enjoy watching college football much more then the pros. Those guys have all the money and all the glory. As a coach, I try to teach kids to be a good sport win or loose and these glowns have to act like complete idiots after scoring a touchdown.

Heck, I remember when spiking the football used to draw a foul.

No...I am not THAT old. It used to be an illegal celebration if I recall. This kind of behavior used to be considered rude and obnoxious and now the NFL thinks it brings in viewer.

Take a look at NASCAR. Look at all the rules they have for their drivers. It is a clean sport that does not put up with a lot of crap.

Aight, I mean it's not racist, but it IS childish. The NBA is worried because of the isht that happened last year, thats great, MOST NBA stars already wear nice suits and what not. It's a fad if you older guyz didn't know that. Suits are in, baggy jeans are out. Granted they are making millions of dollars i don't see why it's going to improve anything. No matter what sport you have your going to run into players that make bad choices...it's like hollywood, youth + money = bad choices, carelessness. It's not guna change anything, infact it may become an even bigger fad now..."pimp"

MattJ 10-25-2005 08:17 PM

The players represent the NBA and everything about them. Would you want some thugged out gangsters representing your billion dollar franchise? I sure wouldnt. They are looked UP to by kids who have dreams of becoming an NBA star and why look up to someone whos ghetto looking? Look up to someone whos professional (or appears to be) and has a nice apperance and represents their employer well.

I can see both sides of the argument though...

cobra4123 10-26-2005 06:41 AM

it's like this most fans of the nba (the ones that buy the product)can't afford the suits and ****. it's silly jordan dressed the way he wanted they all should be able to as long as it isn't a wed dress (rodman)

00mustang_crazy00 10-26-2005 07:44 AM

I agree with it. A few of you mentioned the fact that it is like a company and that is totally true. It is like a company where you are on call at all times because you never know when a photographer or child is going to want to take a picture of you, but if your all dressed in g-unit and you got a pack of friends with you no one will want to go near you. The NHL is no comparison. off-rink 99.9% of them dress all rico sauve and drive bentleys.

LoL thats cuz all the FAN are obnoxious Red Necks...when the fans are worse then the compeditors...of course, and yes i know it's the #1 spectator sport but i mean for god sakes...

04DarkShadowGT 10-26-2005 09:31 AM

Its not like they are making them wear a 3 piece suit everywhere. The requirements are dress pants (including dress jeans), no huge medallions, and a collared shirt.

Yeah I know its tough on these guys not wanting them to wear Jerseys, sweats, etc to work. Man that is horrible that the commissioner wants them to dress nice and look professional.

Yeah thats pretty tough. And its not racist at all, like it or not the general publics view of the NBA is its a thug league. Stern is trying to clean it up so they can get the paying sponsors and big business guys spending $$ to help the league.

If they dont clean up the image the NBA will end up like hockey. These idiot players are too dumb to understand that 75% of America couldnt give a rip about the NBA, where it used to be bigger than football in the Jordan era.

Besides who is Allen Iverson to worry about what kids think. Maybe he should not kick his wife out of their house naked, stop getting arrested, and stop being a thug. Maybe that would make a better example to kids.
