Help, I'm a computer idiot!

I need help posting photos. I just got a new digital camera and would like to post a picture of my ride. I tried posting on another forum, where they have a test site, and my picture are huge!! I have my camera set at 1.7 MP but the pictures still are too big. How do I size these pictures to post or use as a avatar?? Thanks for any info!!

Open the photo in an editor like paint shop pro or what ever you have. Look through the menu choices for resize and click on that. Change the image size to 640x480 or 800x600 at the largest and click on OK. Go to the file menu and select "save as" and give it a name you want or leave it number as it is and add -web so you will know where it's at. This will also preserve the original for print quality. Be sure and save it as a jpeg or gif. Most image editors have a default propritory file type and may not display on the web.

If you have Paint Shop Pro the resize option is under the "Image" heading on the menu bar. Also when the file box opens up to save it, after choosing jpeg you can click on advanced tab and compress it a little more for faster uploads and downloads. 25% is about as far as you can go without loosing to much quality.

Hope taht helps.

Photoshop is a really easy program to use for resizing. You can get the free trial at adobe.com or you can download it somewhere.
