Doing the Nearly Impossible. Shooting 1-mile.
Yep. A mile. Just getting the bullet there isn't a problem... the problem becomes hitting something specific on purpose. Especially since I'll be using a .223/5.56mm AR-15.
I'm aiming at a life size, ballistic gel composed, anthropomorphic zombie. I'll be using an AR-15, 18" barrel, 75gr A-max bullets and a sandbag rest. I got a set of Burris Signature Series Zee rings with 20-MOA inserts and a 1" rail riser with a 30-MOA scope rail, a 10x scope with bullet drop compensator with 11-MOA in it (500yrds, cammed for .223 62gr) and a mil-dot reticle with 156-MOA viewable area. I'm hoping the scope has 25-MOA or so of up from neutral setting so I can actually see the target in the scope. Total bullet drop is about 165-MOA over the mile. Oddly, getting the bullet to 1450yrds wouldn't be hard... I could even "zero" my gun to shoot there according to the ballistic computer. The drop from 1450yrds to 1760yrds (a mile) is massive though. At a mile away the bullet impact angle will be like shooting a target 700 yards away from a 120-story tall building (WTC kind of tall). It's seriously coming down-hill fast. In the past I've done really long shots, even competitively. That was with young eyes and steely nerves and much more powerful guns. 1000yrds is a long way but modern guns and ammo and optics make that not as hard as it might sound if you have the skills. The addition of another 76% on top of that is what's hard. Wind changes, temp changes, etc... make the shot very much harder. On the upside, the bullet will definitely be sub-sonic and lacking energy at that range and I'll be able in all probability to recover the bullet from the zombie. It should have about half the energy of a .22lr bullet @ 100yrds. I'll also be using a .270 Winchester with 150gr bullets, a .408 Cheytac, a .50BMG, a .338 Lapua, a .300 WinMag (with NASTY 220gr VLD's), and a few others but most of those are being brought by other people. |
Where are you doing this? And I want a ballistic gel composed, anthropomorphic zombie.

Are you building an upper for the 1 mile shot or shooting an existing upper? If you are building one then you want to stay away from a chrome lined barrel. The lining increases durability and ease of maintenance but hampers accuracy. Normally that wouldn't be a big deal but for a shot like that you'll want every advantage you can get.
|
Location is secret.. it's about a 6 hour drive from here. If you wanna go you're welcome. It'll be on the 26th of this month.
I'm using an existing upper. Stainless steel match grade heavy barrel with non-engraving polygonal rifling. It's already set up for sub-MOA accuracy. I never get the chrome bores. They're good for machine guns but not for DMR's (designated marksman rifle). |
Good luck with the 5.56 round. I'd be hesitant with my AK's 7.62. However you shouldn't have any problems with the .50cal, is it a bushmaster?

There's supposed to be several .50's there. At least 1 of them is a barret. I don't bring my super spendy toys to parties personally. All of my really big hardware sits in safe's around the country waiting for me to need them.

You have a .50 red? Or... multiple lol?

WHO ARE YOU?!?! |
You should be on that show, top shot on the history channel. I think that's what it's called.
I wish I could talk to my girlfriend's cousin more, he is a sniper for the military, unless my girlfriend's family is misinformed. He doesn't seem like one to lie, but rather her family not understand what he said. I wouldn't even be quick to ask him about it though. Last time I saw him was Thanksgiving before last, he had just gotten back from Afghanistan, I could tell that he had changed. You could see it in his eyes, from the way he acted, and the way he spoke, just a different person from before. |

I thought snipers were not allowed to even tell their family what they were. I swear I've seen that on the military channel before. So people don't find out and go after their families, since snipers are so deadly.

Or they were just making shit up. Not all snipers are "snipers". Sniper is a title, but the same basic job function is performed by a few different sorts of grunt. You have a "designated marksman" which is a grunt who shoots well and has a scoped rifle, then you have a "sniper" who is actually a forward operating intel gathering agent. The role of true "snipers" is not as much supposed to be delivering accurate fire to high value targets as gathering data and THEN delivering accurate fire to high value targets. A designated marksman has none of the responsibility for intel gathering. They're just a long rage problem solver.

I have no idea. I justask his family how he is doing when I see them. I've asked several times what he does, they have always replied sniper. He used to be an MP a few years back from what I saw on his uniform, he has been stationed in south Texas helping with border patrol before also couple of years ago. If he's not really a sniper, then I'd have to guess he qualified on his rifle really well, and that somehow turning into sniper. I'll ask him for myself one day to hear it from him.

You need to go a bit bigger. I've got a m2hb and I'm stuck at 100 yard ranges.
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/8...0904010033.jpg Think the standard ball, api, or apit ammo is expensive. I've got some mk211 rounds left. http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/296/005nv.png |
I am really sick with the AK47 on Black Ops. Just saying.

On a side note, I have a quick question. Went to pull out my AR yesterday to clean it before I was suppose to go shooting with some buddies. Well it turns out that my dad had bought the .22LR kit and installed it, but we've seem to have lost the stock parts. So wtf do I need to get it back to normal again? I'm not that familiar with rifles to know their workings. Do I just need the bolt or would I need a whole new upper? |
I been trying to get approved to actually go out and shoot on the range. Our planes only carry M4's but will still be a good time to fire off a couple hundred. I would like to get on a "ma deuce" I hear that f'n thing everynight tearin shit up.
Hey R3D when I get back home you should take me on a trip. Educate me on a few things. |

Those raufoss rounds are packed with RDX... I'm not sure how you're legal to possess them. You may want to pull that pic down. Juss sayin'.
08_mustang: you need the bolt and bolt carrier to convert back from most kits. You can get the BCG (bolt carrier group, includes bolt and carrier) for 89-200 bucks. Look for SAA BCG's on google and you'll get a good set of results. Stanger00: just gimme a shout when you're back in town. We'll go play long range tactical spermophilus beecheyi interdiction. Those are my squirrel killers. Attachment 14483 |
Mk211 rounds are legal, no problem there. You can pick them up on GB (where I got mine) I bought a couple boxes when they were running about $30 a round bulk.
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=216791633 Heres some shots with APIT. The fifty is mounted in a 1917 dated russian sokolov mount (maxim mount) http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/499/m23p.jpg http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/8325/m211.jpg http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2213/200903200019t.jpg |
kalash: thanks for the tip. Still trying to figure out how it's legal to possess RDX but more power to you.
I'm trying to find just the projectiles. .50BMG is illegal here but we can have .510DTC which is the same exact cartridge but shortened by a itty tiny bit so the gun can't chamber .50BMG. Still generates identical ballistics and uses the same projectiles. I want to build a .50DTC upper for my 3rd AR-15 lower... you know, for deer hunting. |

Check GB, theres tones of pulled bullets coming in right now. Most are API and incendiary. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=217079139 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=216225778 The mk211 rounds are legal because of the small amount of RDX inside each round. The BATFE state that only quantities of explosive larger than 1/4 oz. are prohibited from owning. That is 1/4 oz PER ROUND. Each mk211 only has something like 13 grains of RDX Theres not nearly enough in each round to be a concern. Lets face it, how much RDX are you going to get by cutting $6000 in ammo up? There are MUCH cheaper and easier ways to get explosives. Now something like a vulcan HE round is totally different, it has over 1/4 oz per round. |
