You'd think that I might live up to it once in a while and in a certain sort of sarcastic way I just did. You see the e's were replaced by 3's for a reason and not because some asshat got to the name redneck first (even though they did). It's because I'm a bit of a high tech redneck. I'll prove it to you thusly:

My friend and I were planning our big hunt for the year. Both being geeks (sysadmins) we defaulted to our training rather than rising to the occasion. Instead of saying, "hey you ready?" we:

Used Google Maps and Google Earth to spot potential hunting areas. Searched for personal blogs referencing any of the areas and seeing if there have been any sort of reports of success with hunting/fishing/hiking/swimming; whatever. Having found several good blogs to use for source info we went back to Google Earth and Maps and used the 3d views to decide if the areas were somewhere we could actually get to and deal with. Some more work with online blm terrain maps found boundaries and resources and now we could start to collate all the intel we'd gathered via live collaboration wtih Google apps and instant messaging. We used Google apps to create an online spreadsheet database with formulas to calculate completion percentage for individual action items as well as the whole gathering sub-project. We're also calculating cost with a breakdowns per person and a running total of individual and combined expenses, percentage of expenditures pending and of course deliverables timing to make sure that we get those pending items taken care of. We used the basic principles of successful project management and completed the project almost without ever meeting face to face.










































And then to make this post we first did an outline, then expanded on it, then edited it. We're such methodical (obsessive compulsive) fuckers aren't we?

And to think, Before we went fishing on the big lakes. My father in law and me used to use rolled up huge topical maps with the water line overlayed on th treetops from old ass sattelite images. And that was high tech baby.. Try to find an old roadbed and we'll drop the lines there.. :o

if I could teach the deer to use RSS then I'd be able to track their download IP's using a GeoIP database and at least find the last known address to use that IP. Damn computer illiterate deer.

There are 2 different types of nerds.

1. The school nerd: usually trying to tape his glasses back together after repeated bitchslapping from jocks. fear not my geeky son.. revenge will soon be yours 3 fold.

2. The workplace nerd: i.e. the IT guys, You now have the power to make or break just about anyone in the company. That Jock that may have had enough sense to get a job, will be kissing your ass everyday now.. IT guys here are treated like Royalty.. ;)

LOL - You make me proud to be in the IT field rebel, yeah I been in the IT field for almost 15-20yrs now, its rather sad to think how long I been doing this IT Slave job!

And it is a hard job to do. Our guys had to integrate software from germany and we are now integrated worldwide with our production and inventory control. It took a long time but our IT team lead the way and trained everyone who was involved, Including smartass mechanics and egotistical engineers who thought they were smart, LOL. They were given a year to figure out how to do it smoothly without interupting production, and it looked hopeless from even their perspective. But it's been a year and a half and, we are trouble free with probably the easiest way I've ever seen in reporting production and inventory without loosing numbers from mistakes. Only hiccups are some lost connections from main control in Germany.. And stupid stock selectors in the plant. ( We use SAP now, and everything is Bar Coded).

Hats off to anyone who has to deal with facility wide IT. :smokin:

SAP is a four letter word. The last company I worked at that used it to any great degree, we spent 14 million on hardware, a similar number on software, hired 125 SAP programmers and took 3+ years to basically not make any real changes to how things were done.

Needless to say IT was against the project from the start. It was sold to the board by a cocksucker of a VP that had previously been at a company that used SAP and so figured we should too. Man, that first 25 million could have really done some spiffing up on the production compute cluster but nooooooo.

yeah we had that POS/SAP at my last job and of course the company was Germany based, and well since SAP is a German application so of course they adopted it right away since nobody in America does anything right according to them.

That thing sucked donkey do-do, was a nightmare to support and if we had any major issues with it we had to make sure we called prior to 11am since they are +5hrs ahead of us. Try explaining that to some German Manger over the finance dept during budget season!

Our thoughts exactly, but since Bosch, Mann-hummel, owns us now we have to do what they decide, Sap actually works pretty good in a few depts. such as my 2 depts. But other areas are having headaches daily. It does take away at least 1 hour of my time to weigh and scan my daily production. But after that it's on the stock selectors to locate it. LOL.. And inventory control has to keep track of it.. Once I log it in to sap, I'm done with it. I just gotta watch out for fat finger mistakes.. :o
