got an r6!!!

hey everyone i bought an 2007 r6 just today, and on the way back from getting it i stopped at a gas station and fulled up with 87 oct, well i had not read the manual yet but i just read it and it says premium unleaded only :( .
do any of you guys know if that will affect the bike at all? is there any additive that could help?
thanks for your replies.

Danimal1209 05-19-2010 06:54 PM

It will probably just run funny, not at all how its supposed to. Also, those octane boosters usually go in first so they can mix with the gas, not sure how much it would help with an already full tank of gas.

SeanStang 05-19-2010 07:00 PM

I'd just syphon out the tank and fill her up with 93.

mustangV6_04 05-19-2010 07:28 PM

PUT SOME OF THIS IN!!!

/\/\/\/\LOL!!!! that was a great thread.

Wombozi17 05-19-2010 07:38 PM

Syphon the 87 out. Or try an octane booster. It will all mix in after a ride around the block.

BikerSk8rKid 05-19-2010 07:38 PM

You'll be fine, don't worry about it.

Edit: I've probably put Regular in multiple times on a full tank.
It's not going to hurt your bike, but I believe will slow it down.

WNRacing 05-19-2010 07:50 PM

I'd at the very least siphon out half of the tank and fill it the rest of the way with premium. It most likely wouldn't hurt anything, but I really don't know alot about bikes.. Is it FI or Carb?

Feul Injected.
I wsa gonna say take some out and fill up with the rest.

We get a lot of new riders locally and on forums that come up with this. I was trying to find the best answer thread, but I can't find it.
I've put I think regular in 3 full tanks before I moved to higher Octane, never felt a difference to be honest. But from what some others have said in the threads, it wont hurt your bike really, but I guess it doesn't perform as good as it would on higher octane.

WNRacing 05-19-2010 08:02 PM

It could potentially hurt the injectors (with prolonged use) and lower octane gasoline burns hotter, so you could end up with some detonation issues. Use what's recommended. It probably recommends 91 octane or higher, so it should be fine for one tank, but it will probably run a little sluggish.

BikerSk8rKid 05-19-2010 08:07 PM

Yeah exactly on the running a little sluggish, I was trying to think of that word.
Almost any Fuel Inject MotorCycle should use 91 Octane, it's not nessarly bad to use 87 Octane because I know a lot of people who have for years and have no problem, but yeah one tank wont hurt it.
If you want to be on the safe side like WNraging said, take some out and put in 91 Octane
Every MotorCycle is different because I have a 05 ZX6R (636) and didn't see a difference between Regular and Supreme.

I actually don't know our Outane by numbers, just words.

Edit: Post some pictures.

Edit: I found the thread I was looking for.

K.G.B. 05-19-2010 10:02 PM

Yes well I have a friend who owns a yamaha ZFY-6 (I think that's the model) and my cousin owns a suzuki katana and both their manuals say regular unleaded only and my cousing ran into injector problems for putting 91 oct on his so I didn't think I woud have problems with 87 oct but my manual says premium unleaded only which I'm supposing will be 93 oct.
(I'll have pics tomorrow)

WNRacing 05-19-2010 10:25 PM

Just an FYI, octane booster will do nothing. Most of them boast a 5 octane boost or whatever BS they're spewing and in all reality they typically only increase the octane by a miniscule amount, some have even been shown to reduce octane levels. Just ride it out and fill it up with 91+.

A Katana is different from an R6, as well depends on the years. If I remember correctly fuel Injected you should be running higher octane and if it's Carb it uses lower octane.

Edit: It's Yamaha YZF-R6

I've heard that before to, but I've never put it in my MotorCycle, only my Mustang and I can tell the difference.

It's all in your head. Octane booster = wasted money. Plus in a non-tuned Mustang, there is no advantage as far as HP #'s in added octane levels.

You may have felt a difference if it was an "octane booster" + injector cleaner if your top end was getting gummed up depending on the brand. I use Lucas fuel injector cleaner in my car every 2-3 months to keep the injectors & fuel system clean.

Yeah I use that stuff to every once in awhile, I can't tell if that stuff helps or not.
Well I've always used Regular or for the longest time at least. When I went to go to the Drag Race I put Supreme in with Octane Booster, my little brother, bigger brother, and 3 friends could feel a difference and I believe sound different (better). I didn't drive any different and I didn't get to race because my care was to loud.
My car isn't tuned and it needs it badly, because I feel as if it's not doing what it should be and getting 9 MPG whether I'm on it or not, that's just really low.

Edit: I meant for taking off.

Badfish 05-19-2010 11:28 PM

yep..just like everyone said..syphon that bitch.

congrats on the new bike!! shiny side up dude

I hope this isn't your first bike...it's fast and torquey..if it is..be careful dude. watch the throttle around corners. and beware of COLD TIRES. DONT GUN IT WHEN YOU FIRST GET ON. give the tires time to warm up.

have fun! picsorban

K.G.B. 05-20-2010 06:26 AM

yup well the katana is carburated and the yzf is fuel injected... but yea I will probably end up syphonin it! Yea it is the first bike I own Fish thanks for the advice.

r3dn3ck 05-20-2010 08:06 AM

high octane is only required on bikes that sport high compression. If the bike is fuel injected and has knock sensors, you can run 87 till hell won't have it and it'll pull timing and add fuel until it stops knocking. If it doesn't have either of those then it'll at best not matter a damned bit in cool air, and at worst cause severe engine damage from long term pinging.

K.G.B. 05-20-2010 08:12 AM

So you're saying finish the remainig and just full up w 93 next time?

It's okay my ZX6R is my first bike too, but I've riden a few other bikes long time ago when I was younger, but wasn't long.
If I remember correctly they started using Fuel Injected in the 2003 + bikes for your type bikes.

Yeah you'll be fine.
I talked to my friend who has an R1 that races at our track, he said he used 87 for a long time, but nothing ever happened. After he started using higher octane he could feel more power.

K.G.B. 05-21-2010 12:27 PM

well i fulled it up again with 93 this time and it doesn't run different at all. well the bike feels more responsive at the throttle but nothing negative, EXCEPT FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THAT CAME ON! :(
now it only comes on randomly and no code is displayed.. i really dont know what it could be.. any ideas?

Yeah like I said I never felt/see any difference changing and I used lower octane for about 3 fill ups before I switched to different kind. Check Engine light I have no clue about, because mine never did that, but I don't have a Yamaha and never had one.
It could possibley doing that because of switching the octane and it trying to get used to it. Maybe it'll go away after awhile, but I may be wrong.
I'd take it to a Bike Shop or find a MotorCycle Forum.

Badfish 05-23-2010 12:53 AM

maybe you should've siphoned the gas like most of us said

K.G.B. 05-23-2010 08:43 AM

well i looked it up and it shows a code "18" on the odometer when the light is on which has to do with the EXUP servo. there is valve that goes on the exhaust pipe and it gets stuck at times so nothing to worry about. it goes away when i gas it hard :)

AND WHY DONT WE START A BIKE SECTION ON MUSTANGBOARDS!!??
i think someone had talked about a while back but no success. i went onto the r6 forums and other bike forums but it doesnt feel the same.. i like the people from here better ;)

I knew it had NOTHING to do with what Octane you use. HaHa Glad you found out.
Someone was trying, but I don't think it's gonna happen. I think Dustin explained why in the thread. I do hear ya on the forum, but in my honest opinion this forum seems dead more then before, other forums I'm on have more attcivity and more response to help. I'm not trying to flame this forum or anything, but it's the truth and it does feel like home here.
I only stick to this forum for Mustangs, my MotorCycle forum and then my Motorcycle local forum. Only way I'd leave this forum is when I get a Terminator and then I'd probably be on SVTP more.
You probably feel this way about this forum because you've been on here longer, the other forum your just like a noob. That might be a thought too, becuase I've been on the other two forums for well over a year.

Badfish 05-23-2010 08:50 PM

I still say siphon it
