Do you think Congress is giving Toyota a hard time because...

Do you think Congress is giving Toyota such a hard time just to cast a bad light on Toyota for the purpose of driving up sales of all the GM vehicles they spent all that bailout money on?

GM has had far more, and at times more serious recalls in the past... Congress wasnt barking up their shit then.

stanger00 03-10-2010 10:21 PM

I thinks its because they're asian :dunno:

SeanStang 03-10-2010 10:38 PM

it's definitely being used as an advantage for higher domestic car sales

rebelyell 03-10-2010 11:12 PM

Personally, I think if Toyota was winning the " car wars race" then why not try to even the field a little bit. Kinda like a Nascar race, bump and run type deal. rattle their cage and make them move over, All's fair in the domestic vs foreign car sales. This country needs to get back to business and get domestic sales up.. Yes, I know we have foreign manufacturers in the USA, but no where near as much as the" Big 3" automakers.. :t::t::t::cool:

00blkstanggt 03-11-2010 07:52 AM

I think it's a little bit of both. When you've been a pretty dominant player and something goes wrong, they're going to exploit that like crazy. I still love my american mustang, but I also like our Toyota Highlander. Rides great, decent gas mileage, can haul a lot of crap. Would I ever really buy a car from Toyota? Probably not. They don't really have much that does it for me, but I think it's bad that they tried blaming the floor mat as the cause of the acceleration failures, and then came back a good year or so later saying, oh it's the accelerator itself. They'll come back after all this and be fine.

It's all a cycle. You can only stay on top for so long before something knocks you down.

Lazerred6 03-11-2010 09:46 AM

I'm right in the middle. Yes I think that some of Toyota's new vehicles are under manufactured but I think that the media is overreacting a little

either way Ford and GM aren't complaining I can say that for sure

afterhours 03-11-2010 09:57 AM

Congress is useless.....they are just grandstanding about the recalls, it helps to distract the country from the real issues. there are no jobs, we have spent billions of dollars in stimulus money and still there are no jobs...

people have no money for food and no place to live......and they are worried about toyota and healthcare. i think people would rather have a job than healthcare right now.

PS.Toyota is non-union, and the autoworkers unions spend tons of cash on democrats in congress.

I think it has to do with a little bit of everything, but it's not like there was never a hype with Ford Explorers and Firestone Wilderness AT tires.

The media especially cannot hide these 911 calls with people on the highway that can't stop who are afraid to turn off their cars because they don't want to get hit from behind or crash.

And then of course the government is going to make a big deal to distract the public from real issues and also promote GM and Ford in Toyota's downfall.

JackThe Ripper 03-11-2010 01:52 PM

who gives a shit.

lol

08mustang_gt 03-11-2010 01:54 PM

I also think it is a little bit of both. The main thing I think Congress has a problem with is that Toyota has known about this problem, had it investigated, but failed to find the true problem, and then a year later find out that the issue still exists.

My father worked at the Escape/F-150 plant here in KCMO and he always talked about how cars would come down the line with faulty transmissions or without certain parts put on, and even though the weren't in working order they'd still run them down the line. But, afterwards they'd take them to a back lot and have them disassembled to be repaired.

So, it's not a matter of them having a problem, but the fact that they ignored it for fear of losing too much money and then didn't fix the problem is what is giving Congress a fight to pick.

I don't think this has anything to do with the unions as stated above, because if it was a matter of us making money we would be taxing their imports, not just letting them scathe by as they tax our exports overseas.

Unions to give democrats a lot of money, but without the unions we also probably would've lost the big three.

All in all, it comes down to lobbying and money in reality. I'm sure they want the company that they bailed-out to make more money instead of the foreign automaker.

Dude, zig, you can swing from toyotas nuts all day long dreaming up these rediculous conspiracy theories about how the big bad usa government has it out for toyota while ignoring the fact that toyota knew of this issue, draggfed thier feet on issuing a recall because they were afraid of bad press, then in the end still end up having vehicles with the so called "fix" accellerating to thier doom.

i get it, you like toyota, big whoop. but no, i dont think the government has it out for toyota. I dont think there is some sort of conspiracy, and i think the entire notion of that is flat out stupid.

If you want to walk around sporting your "toyota" tattooed boner go right on ahead, but you of all people should know that other people dont have to agree with it or even give the entire rediculous idea even the slightest bit of credability.

so... go on with yer toyota self.

me, i have better things to do than sitting in the corner wringing my hands worrying if toyota is getting a raw deal.

;)

Uhm.. there is no side to this.... toyota fucked up, tried to downplay it, thought they found a fix, announced the recall, tried to fix it, and the fix still failed, and people are still dying.

Way to go toyota.

how is there sides to that?

im ont the one dreaming up these conspiracies about how the USA is hating on toyota so they can sell domestics.

I was going to ask you how there was a side to this.

make up your mind. You are the one that assumed I was swinging from Toyota's balls... You put me on the opposite side of you at that point. I never meant for there to be a side... GM didnt get blasted by congress for any of their safety related recalls...not like Toyota has gotten blasted.

Now Ill waste more time and deal with yet another one of your assumptions... That Im dreaming of conspiracies about USA hating on Toyota...ect... They are giving Toyota a harder time than they have Domestic auto makers relating to safety recalls and this will boost domestic car sales. Nothing is false about that, and questioning the motives of our government is not conspiracy formulation.

dude its not like ford diddnt get blasted back when they were putting FIRESTONE's faulty products on thier cars.

And yes, i do believe our government has better things to do with its time than attacking toyota to boost auto sales, the government has time and time again made it blatantly clear to US automakers that they preffer imports with thier taxes and such.

Not sure on the GM recall you are talking about, refresh my memory. I remember fords debacle where over 250 people were killed because of the tire problem.

the fact is 52 americans are already dead because of toyotas cars, and thier fix failed. Im glad the government is on thier ass about it,the thought of innocent americans hopping into thier new corrola anr barreling down the highway to hell kinda makes my stomache churn, especially with how many people i know who drive these newer toyotas.

if the government was lax on other companies in the past, i hope that stops as well, i dont care if it is ford, ferarri, or honda, if they cant sell cars that are 100% free of "kill the passengers" feature they shouldnt be selling them. Every manufacturer will eventually experience this.

and i dont believe that it will boost american auto sales. if it does, it will be by a very very small margin, Ford is already doing allright, the other two are circling the drain and even if toyota and honda both start manufactuting cares that detonate at 100 miles with enough power to wipe out a city block it still wont save dodge and chevy. if they dont buy Toyota they will probably buy Honda or Subaru.

dammit, my shft is about to end, so im outta here.

next time show up sooner

lol

zigzagg321 03-11-2010 09:28 PM

I worked in the automotive industry for over 12 years...I have seen quite a few recalls that were safety items that never made it to the news, let alone congress.

I smell fish, you dont. whoopdy fuckin do. But Im honored that you type so much for me...it shows you care. and caring is nice.

Thanks for voting in my poll.

JackThe Ripper 03-11-2010 09:30 PM

That, my dear Zig, is because i DO care.

00blkstanggt 03-12-2010 07:52 AM

GM is actually doing alright surprisingly enough. Their stocks are improving and they are turning a profit. They mentioned they'll pay back the government in June I believe.

Anyways, Toyota screwed up, knew it, and needs to fix the problem. And fix the problem right. They will come out ok. They'll lose some customers, but they'll be fine.

I watched the congress shit on TV and got to thinking. I used my experience in the automotive field to render my thoughts. And chronic has nothing to do with anything here. What am I paranoid about? Nothing... Based on the logic you used on me, anyone who has a different opinion from you must be a paranoid pothead. weak.

afterhours 03-12-2010 10:08 AM

Congress is worthless, and this is just another excuse to get some free publicity and look as if they are actually doing something.

is a massive conspiracy...? no, its a very small one. they have an opportunity to look concerned for the public safety, and beat on toyota a little. this will help them come next election.

these are the same guys that gave millions to Wall Street....while people are losing thier jobs, thier homes and ruining thier lives.

they gave money to GM, gave a $4500 check to bribe people to buy cars.....that will end up costing us Billions of dollars.

these are the same people that sat and watched as the economy took a big dump over the last 10 years....

they are incompetant, and self serving. they only care about keeping thier jobs......and right now, with millions out of work it makes sense to distract us with "toyota hearings" .

PColav6 03-12-2010 10:12 AM
