I might get a chance to save a little girls life

A few years ago I signed up for the bone marrow registry when I donated blood and today out of the blue I got a call from the michigan blood center saying that I am a possible match for a 5 year old girl with leukemia.

I go in tuesday to get some test run to figure out if I am a good enough match.

I don't know why but if I'm not a match I feel like I will be really disappointed I don't even know who this girl is but I really want to help her.

Wish me luck

King 07-09-2009 12:06 PM

Good luck, bro. That's a huge deal, I hope it all works out good.

krazypony 07-09-2009 12:55 PM

I hope every goes well, my mom had bone marrow leukemia years ago and is now in remission for some time now.

Steeda97 07-09-2009 01:37 PM

Good luck! I hope its a match!

JackThe Ripper 07-09-2009 01:42 PM

thats awesome man!

its really admirable yer willing to go through with this. A co-worker of mine had lukemia and his brother was a match for bone marrow, they put that fat needle into each femer 90 times to get enough bone marrow, he couldnt walk for about a week. extremley painful procedure, while the pain will suck, it will pale in comparison to what she is going through!

Man thats great to hear and like Jack said "You Da Man". I wish the best for both you and the little girl and your families. :t:

Switch 07-09-2009 02:21 PM

It's a brave thing to do for someone you don't know. I admire that.

Lazerred6 07-09-2009 02:38 PM

Yeah I read up on the procedure and apparently now days they put you out completely and you wake up like you got yourself a nice prison piggyback that leaves you in a wheelchair for a bit.

I'm not sure what the chances are of me actually being a match are I have read everything from 1 in 50,000 to 1 in 10 million but I'm not sure how close you have to be for them to want to due further testing.

All I know is the social worker on the phone said that my name popped up in there system with and urgent next to it and apparently that doesn't happen to often she made it sound like she hadn't personally seen it before

She was all worried that I would have changed my mind because I signed up over 2 years ago. I told her that when I signed up I did it hoping that she would call me some day.

If I am a match and it all works out I am so buying a lottery ticket to see if I have any random chance left:D

Slim03GT 07-09-2009 02:46 PM

Thats great dude. I hope it works out for the both of you. Not everyday you meet someone like yourself, Lazerred.

Who are you going to donate your heart to?

J/k Thats pretty cool. I used to organize the blood drives at school, but haven't even donated blood in for so long just because I'm always busy when they ask and never think about going when I have time.

PureStang 07-09-2009 07:20 PM

good job...when i got my motorcycle license, i signed up to be an organ donor. please let us know what happens, i always like to hear people doing stuff they dont have to for people they dont know that are in desperate need.

mustangvsix 07-09-2009 07:36 PM

best of luck man, I hope it really works out!

Lazerred6 07-14-2009 09:42 AM

Just got my blood drawn a few hours ago and now I have to wait for 1 to 6 weeks while they do extensive testing and then the doctor will decide what he wants to do based on all the possible matches that they get

I will not be informed how many possible matches that they have but statistically I have a 1 in 12 shot of being the 1 from this point

King 07-14-2009 10:03 AM

Awesome! Dude, you really are a real life superhero.

man that is awesome i hope you get to be the one to save a life

spike_africa 07-14-2009 01:04 PM

I don't like giving blood and that is nothing compared to getting marrow taken out.

Its really cool of you to do that for someone else.

The doctors will the be the ones doing the real saving I don't really have to "do" anything. I'd be like the main ingredient to a recepie. The chef still makes the meal but without the beef he can't make burger.

LilMissLayla 07-14-2009 02:44 PM

May the chef have the beef! lol

Yay, Lazarred! Good luck to you and the little girl!

Lazerred6 07-31-2009 02:36 PM

So after a bit of waiting I got a call today saying that I am in fact a close enough match. There is however 1 person on the registry that is just a tiny bit better match than me so I am "on call" they have not been able to reach this other person yet and if they do but the person backs out or gets sick I will step in. They will be doing the procedure on August 19 so I will know before then.

Either way I am just glad that someone can help this girl and I would feel really honored if it was me but a better match is just that. I hope for the saftey of the other guy/girl and the little girl as well I really hope everything works out.

TUFF 4.6 07-31-2009 04:16 PM

I have a very high regard for you. I think what youre doing is one of the greatest thing that someone can do in their life. Our PRAYERS are with you and the little girl.

Mr. Zip 07-31-2009 04:54 PM

You are the kind of person I respect.

Lazerred6 06-08-2011 03:22 PM

So just shy of 2 years later....

Got a call today from the bone marrow registry the same girl (now 7) needs help again and because the other persons donation didn't work out quite as well as hoped I'm probably up next I might have to go in to get the surgery as early as the 2nd week of July.

This is kind of a huge week for me I feel like I'm dreaming. I get to be a dad and I get a crack at being a hero.

:D

bigkeeko 06-08-2011 04:55 PM

Fair play. Thats a hell of an offering for a stranger.

all the best.

whitestang04 06-08-2011 05:30 PM

Wow. I was wondering who bumped this old thread. It sucks that the first donor didn't work out. Hopefully you can help out this time around.

Sounds like it's been a pretty eventful week for you.

krazypony 06-09-2011 07:41 AM

Good luck man, hope all works out all the way around!

TUFF 4.6 06-20-2011 06:48 PM

Ben, I'm speechless, but I'm proud as hell of you!!!!!
Good Luck and bless you and that little girl.
