about the writers strike :

i get that dramas will have to temporarily shut down...my shows 24 and lost are gonna suffer...but heres what i dont understand about the writers strike

1. how come the late night talk shows have to go into reruns? those guys cant sit on a couch and talk to people unscripted? i always figured leno didnt really have a personality but dave letterman cant ad-lib for an hour? geez i'm pretty sure i could shoot the breeze with some celebrity for 15 mins a pop without the aid of a writing team

2. why is hollywood in an upheaval? whens the last time hollywood came out with somethin new anyway? even blockbusters like the lord of the rings and king kong have been done already...hell everything is a remake anyway or based on a past novel...they make it seem like the worlds gonna end if the writers strike

WaterDR 11-07-2007 06:48 PM

Because Hollywood is run by the unions. If someone writes ANYTHING for ANYSHOW, they are in the writers union.

sorry but I can't say i really care. i think there are better things we as humans can be doing than sitting behind the tv vegging out on the tube, and most of the crap that is on there.

i use my tv for

Pro/College Football, College/Pro Hoops, and movies. that's it.

all these unions are ridiculous..its time to get rid of the unions, and the bs that comes with them. this goes for the darn autoworkers, framers, welders, writers, whatever job field it is. Where there is a Union, there is Greed.

Any normal person or people who would walk out on their jobs, would be fired, but yet these assholes walk out, and protest, cry till they get their way, then they get their jobs back...FU people...you make me sick!

StreetRacer 11-07-2007 08:07 PM

wow...well i have to say i dont have a problem with the unions...and anyway you can make a decent honest livin i say go for it...i just have a problem with so called talk show hosts who cant hold a conversation without writers...and i have to question the creativity of so-called writers who only remake evrything anyway....somebody please tell me the last original movie that came out

spike_africa 11-08-2007 06:28 AM

I dont care either as long as "Attack of the show" on G4TV is still on (its the only thing that has writter that i watch) then im happy. I mostly watch speedvision and history channel and TLC,Discovery in HD etc... not much for those other shows.

i really can care less i just watch pro football and the speed channel.

00blkstanggt 11-08-2007 09:29 AM

Well I like/dislike unions. I was in one and they do come in handy for job security and you get paid better then what you might be making for the same job that wasn't in a union. I don't like unions cause it's freakin hard to fire anyone. Anyways, the talk shows have writers because the monologues are scripted as well as the other crap they do during the show. There are tons of writers jsut for Conan alone. I can understand where they are coming from with striking because the movie companies probably rape them on all the royalties and dont give them crap.

Lord of the Rings was never done before except in some cartoon form. There are plenty of good movies out there. You just have to expand further then what they constantly advertise on t.v. and previews. Plus whats wrong with blockbusters? they are usually good for the most part.

Well, I don't share your opinion. I deal with unions all the time in my job and while some of them are completely out of touch, most are there to protect workers and fight for good wages ect....Unions are not a bad thing man. You obviously have never had a job in an industry that doesn't give an F about the workers, but loves the profit they get from the workers doing their job...and at the same time not giving workers the proper benefits, wages ect while they make billions of dollars.

At the same time I agree 00blkstanggt about being hard to fire anyone in the union. Try working in government and try to fire a union worker....almost impossible. That sucks

It's not that Jay Leno or any other talk show person can't do a show without the writers, it's the fact that they support unions and won't cross the picket line.

You are 100% correct. It's not that these guys aren't capable, they support their writers. Did anyone see the picture in the LA times of Leno bringing donuts and stuff to the writers on the picket line?

Streetracer i don't watch 24 but i will be pissed if this affects Lost

I love 24. It's postponed now. They don't know when they will actually start it. I love Scrubs as well and this is the last season and it might not get a finale.

WaterDR 11-08-2007 07:31 PM

Unions are generally very bad for this country. While they serve a purpose, the purpose is only for the members. I have been doing consulting and industrial sales for 15 years and have been in over a 100 production facilities. The union plants have by far, the most lazy people I have ever met. It is a disgrace what unions have done to the manufacturing in this country. They are destroying it.

GM, a union company, just posted the largest quarterly loss for any company in the history of american business. We service many of their plants. Their boiler operators make $150k+ per year. The 6 guys that mow the lawn all make $125k and they wonder why they can't make any money.

As far as the writers, I might miss The Office for a few weeks, but otherwise, go on dam strike. I could care less. Why dont they try to work in the real world for a change.

JackThe Ripper 11-08-2007 07:48 PM

Well said Blake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get to deal with union employees quite often in telecommunications. The old "Ma Bell" guys with the union attitude. Honestly they are far more trouble than they are worth, they expect everything to be done for them and are next to useless. They refuse to spread thier knowledge about systems and generally act like a bunch of spoiled children.

I dont work for a union, and quite frankly, i dont ever want to work in a union. I dont want all the processes to be plagued by a bunch of slacking lay-abouts who would rather toss out "union" and "Seniority" than roll up thier sleeves and get the job done. And god forbid they actually have to work, they will bitch about it the whole time through.

as for the writer union, i dont know what thier issue is and quite frankly i dont care.

Unions were awesome back in the day, they protected employees and promoted fair treatment, they revolutionised workers rights and thier influence has without a doubt made america a better place to work, but that is the past, things have changed, and now unions are simply havens for the unmotivated and lazy who would rather watch thier company go down in a ball of flames than to lift one fat fucking lazy finger to do thier job.

This rant does not stretch into all jobs, im specifically talking about telecommunication companys like oldschool AT&T, Bellsouth, Southwestern Bell, etc, etc.

WaterDR 11-08-2007 08:16 PM

Really, I can only speak form my own observations.

I think the problem is that union workers to me seem to be constantly focused on themselves. While non-union workers or more likely to be focused on making the process better, a better product, or addressing the needs of the customer. Sure, there are shitty non-union companies too. By and large, unions are fine when kept in check, but what typical happens is that they get way too much power and prevent businesses from making healthy business decisions.

My brother-in-law is a union electrician. Great guy. I love him. But, he spends his life actually planning his next lay-off. I can't explain it, but to the rest of us, it seems idiodic and completely non value-added for a business.
