Getting ready to install Plenum & TB??

I'm getting ready to install my C&L Plenum and Accufab 75mm throttle body and I've read every thread on this site to help prepare me for any problems I might have. So I took the advice that several of you and purchased a new Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) from Autozone for $29.00, however the TPS didn't come with screws to directly bolt on to the new throttle body, apparently they want you to use your original screws, but I thought the whole point of getting a new TPS was to avoid that because they are hard to get off the original TB

. Should I go to the hardware store and get similar screws or take the TPS back to Autozone and go to Ford and pay $50 for a TPS, which I'm sure comes with new screws???

Thanks for your help, I don't have any mechanical skills so I get nervous before doing an install.

I personally woudn't buy a new TPS! I have the C&L plenum and accufab t/b and I didn't need a new one! I think you'll be just fine with your stock TPS!

return the one you bought save the money for whatever you dont need it. they come right out with a bit of wd40 and some arm strength.

I agree, I re-used mine. Just make sure you have the correct size torx driver and be careful, the rest is easy.

What are the typical power gains on this setup as I was also thinking going this route on my 03 GT

spike_africa 06-02-2005 06:14 PM

6-7hp. the accufab one sopposebly makes like 8hp.

Do NOT return the TPS. Keep in case you need it. It is easy to damage when removing...at least that way you will have it if you need it. Then, take it back.

jjtgiants 06-03-2005 03:50 PM

Thanks, I'll hold on to it and if I don't need it I'll just return it. Also, can I use my Predator to check the TPS voltage? If it's out of wack and ideling funny how do I go about adjusting it? Sorry for all the questions.

spike_africa 06-03-2005 05:50 PM

just install it and if everything is good dont worry about it.

now if its weird you need to get a volt meter and read the volts on the wires comming out of it. to adjust you lossent he screws and move it up or down. this changes the volts. if you cant adjsut it enough take it off and drill the holes out a tad. This will let you move it around a bit more.

So I installed the plenum and throttle body this evening and everything seems to be ok, but I'm getting a loud whistle sound coming out of my air filter. Has anyone ever experienced this and do you have any suggestions for fixing it?

I'm thinking I might have a gap between the intake and throttle body that is causing it. The whistle goes away when the rpm's get up around 2,000.

WaterDR 06-04-2005 04:24 AM

If you hear a whistle, you have a leak sucking in air somewhere. I'll bet you $5.00 that your IAC gasket is leaking. One sure fire way to check, is while the car is running, move the rubber hose around that goes to the IAC. You will hear the pitch change for the whistle. Just pull off the IAC and install it properly. The gasket is most likely pinched, or you do not have it tightened enough.

Thanks guys for all your hlep. I will check the IAC gasket this morning and let you know how it turns out

spike_africa 06-04-2005 09:22 AM

I dought its the IAC if youy hear it comming form the air filter its just your motor breathing its fine.

jjtgiants 06-04-2005 10:17 AM

So I took the IAC off and made sure the gasket was on properly then I put it back on and problem solved! The noise that was coming from the air filter was not normal, but problem solved. The voltage on the TPS is .97, which I think is ok. The RPMs hang a tiny bit around 1,000rpm, but then drops down to 850-875rpms while idling.

I also drove it a bit and I can feel a nice little gain in the upper rpms.

Thanks again guys, if I lived near you guys I'd buy you all a beer!

I just re-cycled the old tps - I just unscrewed the old ones and used them (mine were not hard to remove - I believe the problem with the tps is with the sensor itself being easy to get out of adjustment or damage while moving it over). If I had experienced problems, I'd have pulled the old one off and purchased a new one in that event. I am running the identical rig (75mm accufab & C&L) you're installing, and I'm happy with them. I installed them myself, and consider the work an "easy" project (relatively speaking). Just bolting on some new parts.

The hardest part of the install was disconnecting the plastic throttle linkage behind the intake plenum (I wish they were metal - its a wonder I didn't break them). Be patient with this part of the job.

You'll need a few deep sockets (wish I was sure as to size - 8, 10 & 13mm, I believe).

Take some quick digital photos of the original setup if you lack a good manual with clear illustrations - the new components hood up in the oe locations, using the oe linkage, etc. Having these photos will help you if you lose your place.

If all else fails, get on this thread and get some help. There's usually someone here who knows what you need to do.
