whats the basic way to drift?

i did a perfect drift today....by accident....speeding down a street in the city around 115am and came on a kinda sudden turn...couldnt really stop in time and ended up driftin around the corner....wheels screechin....back end slidin...front wheels turned...anybody know how to do this on purpose?...it was fun but i have no idea how to properly do it again...is it like a donut? guys behind me said it looked really good and once my heart settled back down into my chest i played it off like i knew exactly what i was doin

SnTBakosFinest 05-29-2007 11:04 PM

lol...i guess everybody answered that for me...really a dick thing to say....but anyway...about that drifting question....

MattJ 05-30-2007 07:04 AM

you are gonna wrap your car around a pole if you are on here asking "how do I drift?"

its not hard... go practice on an empty lot with orange cones or back in an industrial park on a sunday.

This coming from the guy who broke three bumpers attempting to drift and taking corners at high speeds...

There is a picture I've been waiting to use for SOOO long for this occasion.

Ghostalker 05-30-2007 07:21 AM

the likelihood of one accidentally drifting... is slim to none.
Coming around a corner too fast, too late? So you pressed the accelerator harder?
Anyhow, pretty easy- Driving along, downshift- gas it and turn the wheel, just a bit.
Do not do on open roads, you WILL go to jail, unlike speeding where you can very often get away with getting a ticket, or a warning. Drifting on public roads will rack up a list of charges including reckless driving and public endangerment, and will most certainly get your license revoked for years to come. And that is if they dont throw you in the slammer. Be smart, be careful, have fun.

SnTBakosFinest 05-30-2007 07:42 AM

lol no one gives him a straight answer on how to do it...i love it.

We do it cause we don't want the stang wrapped around a pole though. ;x

However

are you looking for 4 wheel drifts or 2 wheel? They're not just maneuvers to be done by anyone looking for a good time. When it comes time to use them appropraitely, doing it wrong will kill you.

It's all about breaking traction in a controlled manner. First thing first, get your car corner weighted and properly set up for drifting with painfully stiff springs and similarly uncomfy struts and shocks, put on some 4.30 gears and tires you can't afford. Now you're properly equipped to start learning. Doing drifts in a stock suspension mustang is stupid beyond belief. It's just not intended to do that sort of thing well/at all.

Once you've set the car up, for a 2 wheel drift you need to break rear traction while powering through the turn. Some pros use the handbrake to initiate the slide, once you've broken traction at the rear you'll have to start actively counter-steering the car (on stock suspension this is where the rear becomes the front all sudden like and you die shortly thereafter) while stuffing the go pedal down so the rear tires spin violently. You need to start the corner in a lower than normal gear to give yourself the power to spin the meats. This is very difficult on pavement but stupid easy on dirt. If you have a dry lakebed to practice in it'll help develop the technique.

4 wheel drifts are much more complicated to do and almost 100% of the time require speeds that are unjustifiable in order to pull it off on dry pavement. It requires that the car be well balanced grip wise in order for all 4 tires to lose the same amount of traction throughout the curve. Many people die doing this . It's not usually a deliberate act unless it's raining and you're a german driver on the autobahn in a BMW.

PColav6 05-30-2007 04:50 PM

zigzaggthefag321 05-30-2007 04:55 PM

Badfish 05-30-2007 11:46 PM

its not even the fact that he wants to drift...it's that he's OK with crashing his nice ass mustang for another car? please..i may have done some stupid shit in my time. but that shit is just retarded

razorjr07 05-31-2007 04:06 AM

why is everyone getting upset? it is his car and his life. therefore it is his choice about whether or not he wants ti risk it.

i didnt think driftin was all that dangerous...i actually planned to practice it at a track somewhere...theres a military compound near with an airfield that they hardly use...i go there alot..its pretty private...gotta get through 3 checkpoints to get there so theres no danger to anyone else....as for my car...i bought one....i'm pretty sure ford made some more so while i do love and baby my car in the looks department...i did buy it to play with...i drive my corolla like its a corolla and i drive my mustang like the badass american v8muscle it is...

r3dn3ck 05-31-2007 09:06 AM

well then... get yourself a set of 4.10's or 4.30's, keep it in too low a gear and remember that letting off the gas all sudden like is how to find a wall. power through, counter steer and use of the e-brake are the basic things you should master first. Try wet pavement... it's easier to get sideways at low speeds so you can refine your technique.

StreetRacer 05-31-2007 01:10 PM

damn...i really like 3.73s...i keep my top speed with those...i heard that 4.10s top speed is around 120...my bud has a 2005gt with a supercharger and 4.10s and while he can smoke me off the light...it sucks when we are doin the road trip thing...cause hes done at 120 and i'm still movin to 140...it just doesnt make sense that a machine like that gets left behind on the interstate
