question about snow
when the meterologists say 1 inch of accumulation, do they mean 1 inch of snow or of rain? i was listening to my local station and they said no more than an inch of accumulation. the only thing is that we have like 5-6" out there now.

1 inch is supposed to come but since you have 5 or 6, forget what he says.
we just got hit with a nasty amount of lake effect snow. we are on a snow advisory untill tomarrow 6am |
ha ha ha snow...what is this snow?...lol:salook:
|
I haven't seen snow actually fall in like 15 years. 5-6 may fall but 1 inch will stick is probably the meaning. Never pay attention to weather reports... they're wrong until proven right after the fact.
|
well i do know that 1" of rain is 10" of snow. you think that is what they mean?
|
no... I think they mean 1" of the <insert daily precipitation here> will stick until tomorrow adding to whatever the solid base is now. I saw a weather map this morning that showed your whole time zone in a world of cold and wet for the foreseeable future. Relax and cuddle up with a good book or porno... it's gunna be a long week.
EDIT: Dude...your WHOLE state is under a winter storm warning. welcome to hell. You should see the water vapor density of the clouds to the west that are moving in on you... I'd be concerned. It's a very severe winter storm and it's going to draw in moisture from the atlantic and the great lakes. Look for increasing snow and rain and continued nut chillin cold. |

1 inch of accumulation means an average of 1 inch thoughout a given area will be on the ground after the snowfall.
a lot of it depends on where you live. Here in denver they will say 5 inches of snowfall, however, i live in the western part of the metropolitan area called littleton, which is right up by the foothills and we normally get more. As far as snowdrifts and stuff, they dont count. Weather forecasters are just giving thier best educated guess based off thier knowledge of weather systems, the current path of the storm and conditions in the are the storm is about to hit. Nowaways all that information is fed into weather programs which create virtual models of the weather system and let it play out virtually to see what might happen. So, lets say they run 10 weather models. 1 predicts rain 2 predict no precipitation 7 our of 10 result in snow that means a 70% chance of snow Out of those 7, they have the following snow accumulation predictions model 1 3 inches model 2 2 inches model 3 4 inches model 4 1 inch model 5 12 inches model 6 3 inches Model 7 3 inches Well, chances are model 5 is not right, it is way higher than anything else so it is tossed out. Model 1 states 1 inch, which is lower than all the others so will probably be tossed as well So they would probably come out with those weather models predicting a 70% chance of snow with snow accumulation of 2-4 inches. Ok, well, a lot of this is pulled right out of my ass, but i DO know they use weather modeling software to determine the percentages so the rest seems pretty obvious. While people normally say weatherman dont know shit, because of the times where they were WAY off and the 1 model which did not fit any of the other patterns was rejected even though it was predicted, resulting on the weather man predicting snow and 20degrees when instead it is 70 and sunny, the remarkable thing is how often they really are dead on target. most of it is software now, but it is up to the meteorologist to take the models and decide which are complete anomolys and which ones seem to fit the trends of the past. :topsecret: |
