winter driving
this is my first winter with my mustang. ive heard of people with camaros/trans ams/mustangs putting sandbags or cement bags in the trunk for added weight over the rear axle so it doesnt slide as much over slippery surfaces. any insight/experience on this subject? chicagos a bitch in the winter :)

im from chicago too, last year i had my car in the winter also, just dont give as much gas, drive slow and always be aware where the cars are around you and you will be fine... when your driving through the snow start out in a lower gear.... just be careful thats all and avoid huge snow piles
BTW its frickin cold today, set a record today for earliest snow |
That sucks you guys are getting snow already....I'm just chillen in the 80 degree sun! ha ha ha.

I wish I was in Cali. Its 70's here in VA.

40 up here in OH. Yea, I put 2 60lb. bags in my trunk. I just got my new tires on today, A/W Coopers. The bags really do help, but you also have to slowly accelerate, especially on hills, and start breaking earlier.
|
This setup worked well for me last winter: two 40 lbs bags of sand in the rear most portion of the trunk and no traction control. Just remember to be extremely gentle of the throttle and if you have stick, you must make sure the clutch engagement is very smooth. Also, when you are about to go up a hill, pick up some speed so that you build momentum and are less likely to get stuck. Remember, stick w/ sand so that if you do get stuck, you can use some to help you get unstuck by throwing some by the tire (in certain situations).

here in good ol minnesota we got about 2 inches of snow between yesterday and today.. about 25-30 degrees out... had flurries at the beggining of the month too... time to store the car and bust out the winter beater....
|
hah yeah, chicago is rearing its nasty head already. bout 20-30 degrees lower than average today. gonna start shopping for winter tires this weekend and ill definitely be picking up some bags of sand as well, thanks for the tips.

it was 32 here today in wisconsin and its snowing right now. its not going to stick though and i drove my dodge today. its gonna be back up to 60s again this week. us eastern WI people and north eastern chicago people that are by lake michigan get some goofy ass weather. its probably the only place in the world where it can be 20 degrees one day and 75 the next. seriously it was bright as hell today with the sun shining hard and snowing. last month it was thundering and downpouring and it was as sunny as it could ever be. lol

thats crazy, its snowing for you guys already, its like 90 degrees here.

yup, lake effect weather is a pain. there was 90 degree weather less than 10 days ago. i just walked in the door and ive got 2 shirts + a hoodie on
|
i drove mine last winter--only thing thats any bit difficult besides stopping which is hard in any car on the snow is the hills they are not your friend

Spend $600 on a set of Blizzaks or a winter beater.
My Mustang does not see the snow. 4.10's + 315's + Blower Car is not a good idea in the snow, so it get's parked in the garage. |

i think this year ill get the winter tires and by next year i should be more financially stable (as long as the mustang addiction doesnt COMPLETELY drain my bank account!) and ill buy a cheap winter beater thats 4x4, probly a old blazer or something.

hmm...i hate kansas
like 5 days ago it was 85 and yet yesterday it got down below freezing |
Had my first winter with the stang last year. Had 4 40lb sandbags in the truck with the stock gatorbacks, which did not work. I went out and purchased a used set of Blizzack snow tires.
|
good luck.
