Laptop advice.....
 

Looking for a new laptop... use it for general purpose only, not gaming or movies, or much entertainment at all.

No Dell's.

Budget 2000 dollars, any good ones these days? Sony, Toshiba, HP, Gateway, so on......

why no dells? They are in my mind the best...

Well if you're not going to be gaming or doing multimedia $2000 is way more than you'll need. I recommend Toshiba, HP, Dell, or Apple.

I have used Dell and HP's exclusively for the last 8yrs for work. The dell has been by far the best laptop I have used. I always have the latest models and dell is the best from a reliability standpoint. I have a new model HP and have had 2 new laptop's and 3 new HD's in less than 8 months. My dell lasted 3 yrs with not 1 issue. Like the other poster said 2k is alot of money to spend on a laptop and if no gaming is needed you will have a fair amount of money left over.

What dell?

I have an inspirion 6000 and have had many problems. A blue screen has appeared numerous times and have had to totally wipe my computer and re-do everything. I couldn't even go into safe mode.

That's a software problem not a hardware problem. Blame Microsoft, not Dell.

^^^What they said. Were you adding new hardware? Were you applying hotfixes or patches? The dell laptops are awesome as I said in my prior post. I work in the IT field and have been for over 10years and have experienced many brands.

I told my wife if all you want a laptop for is to browse the net when Im on the our PC you dont need all that biometric security etc.... I got her a Toshiba Satellite for $600 and thats what Im using right now since my pc is on family video duty for past few days. Dont overspend as the laptop you get today will be half next year. Get a laptop that meets your needs. Dont pay extra for a thinner laptop if you will not be carrying it or get something that has a latest and greatest if all you want to do is edit some pics,browse the web or work on a word document. If you plan on using it at home as a 2nd desktop get a 15in or larger and if you will be typing alot get a laptop with a full keyboard and nice palm rest surface. I got my Satellite with rebate added some memory with rebates and I am very happy and would recommend it. My other laptops have been IBM thinkpads which I still use for work. Why spend 2k when you dont have to, just think about it and read reviews.

I bought an HP Pavillion 5020us from Circuit City in Feb. about $1000 at the time, I have not had one single issue with it so far. or with the HP Desktop I bought last August.

the laptop has plenty of power and the graphics are pretty good too, I do CAD work and it runs Autocad just fine.

I have the same one and mine is wonderful. Had it a year with ZERO problems.

I completely agree with what venom said, dont spend a lot of money unless you desperately need those features. go to newegg.com and find a laptop for 1/3 the price

have you considered Apple?...im using my friends and its faster, and MUCH easier to use after u get used to it...its also keeps up w/ updates much better than PC's...but im still getting a pc...only cause i organize my things a lil different than how apple allows u to...

now..to my experience...DELL SUX!!! i have had to take it to get a new HD 2x for just kicking the bucket (it died) and 1x cause of the blue screen of death that appeared after 3 house of usage...im gonna try to build my own or get a high performance computer for the all the pc gaming and music listening i do...

here are some computer i would use: Tosiba, HP, Compac, ABS Computers, and there are more but i just woke up so i cant think...ha...just go to you local circuit city/best buy stores to see whats available...

Mac 100%, you can't beat their easy to use OS and the fact there aren't **** for viruses out there I doubt you'll ever run into trouble.

"PERSONAL OPINION" Dell........SUCKS... While at Circuit City we had 5 different dell owners bring in the same model pc in one week with the SAME problem.. Ticking time bomb IMHO..

I say go with a Toshiba, they have some great laptops and if you have a budget of $2k then you could get a good computer that will last you for several years.

My top 4. Toshiba, HP, Acer, Gateway.

You can actually get a decent laptop for $500 + a memory upgrade $60-100.

I just bought my brother a small acer for $499 + $60 for an extra 512 memory. BUT if you want something to last you for a good while 4+ yrs I'd go with something in the neighborhood of $1000-1500 by Toshiba, or HP.

The specs most are looking for now are atleast:

AMD Turion64, or Intel Centrino or Core Duo. ( I prefer AMD ) <-Personal Preference.
Usually looking for 1024mb ddr BUT They do come with up to 2048mb now!
Screen size is personal, but most 17+ inch include the normal Number pad like a regular keyboard.

Ok, so after reading a lot and going to my local Best buy store and basically learning computer info 101, I've found one i like a lot.

My old laptop is Dell Inspirion 528mb memory and 1.60GHz Intel Pentium M Processor and 40 GB hard drive with Windows Media Center.

Basic stuff is 1.83GHz Centrino Core Duo, DDR2 2 GB ram, fingerprint security, 15.4 tru brite screen, 120GB Hard drive. I think I'm gonna get this one. Good choice?
