Pitbull attacks are getting way outta hand.

Just read the second incident within two weeks. I also got this in a email from a local member of another board.

neighbors pitbull attacked my kid.....

and they proceed to tell me that they can only qaurentine the dog for 10 days then they have to give it back to the owner WTF ??? My son is getting ****ing surgery on his broken arm and stitches from the bites and there not gonna put that ****ing thing to sleep?? i already contacted a laywer and i'm gonna sue the **** out of them, but what can i do about them getting the dog back???

he was riding his bike on the main sidewalk and the dog is a pretty muscular pit, it proceeded to jump the fence and chase him down on his bike, knocked him off his bike and broke his shoulder, them bit him on his legs and forarm, i don't understand? They told me because the dog has his shots they couldn't put him to sleep?

It sucks..but I honestly don't think it is as bad as it seems. You aren't gonna hear about a Golden Retriever biting some kids head..well..because it is a Golden Retriever..but anytime I pit bites someone you hear about it so it makes it seem like it happens a lot. Kind of like shark attacks..they are very spread out but everytime it happens you hear about it and it makes it seem like it happens all the time? I dunno..I feel the same as you Fonzi but I think the media hypes it up and makes it seem like there are rabid pit bulls roaming the streets just waiting for kids to walk around the corner.

foncarelli 07-13-2006 06:16 AM

That incident happened in Dearborn Heights, MI. Which is a very popular suburb. I live in Ecorse, where Pitbull activity got so bad that they banned that breed of dog altogether.

The media really does hype it up, but these owners know when they have people biters or not.

True..word of the day "People Biters"

MattJ 07-13-2006 06:42 AM

The only reason putbulls have a bad name is because of the idiotic owners that use them for illegal fighting rings. Pitbulls are very affectionate dogs that will give their life to spare their owners and they use the personality of the dog to do bad things.

A golden retriever and pit are bread for different things, a golden isnt going to track a kid down to attack him.

Imo they should outlaw pit bulls and rottweilers

very stupid suggestion. Its the owners that help create that aggressive behavior. Some dogs are more prone to that than others. Instead bigger fines should be implimented to the owners, as well as them loosing their dog.

You missed the point of why I said that. I was saying if a Golden did do that..you wouldn't hear about it..but you hear every little thing a Pit does.

IMO opinion, pitts are just getting the media attention, about 5-6 yr ago it was rottweilers..(spelling)...and now they have moved on to pitts...its just a load of crap if you ask me. Dogs will be dogs..

No I stand by my thought, I see no sence in taking the chance. Some breeds are more prone to causing harm than others. You cannot dispute that, well I guess you can but the fact of the matter is some breeds have been bread to be fighters etc. Just the same as some animals where bread for hunting.

I have a beagle, which where bread to retrieve birds. She has never been hunting, has never been taught to chase, but she does it without thinking when other dogs in the same yard just dont.

It is no different that certain types of sharks, fish, or whatever else are more aggressive. I am by no means saying that only those types of dogs bite people but they are more prone to do so. I just dont see the point in taking a chance. Maybe it has to do with my neighbors daughter got her whole cheek ripped off by a pit, that whenver I saw it was as gentle as can be. I just dont see a lab doing that.

Also there must be a reason that humane shelters dont adopt out pits or rots when they come in.

Blk02stang 07-13-2006 11:21 AM

Here in Va they are trying to take actions against pitbulls since they have had a couple cases of them actually killing people. One lady who was 80 was attacked and killed by her neighbors 3 pits, well the dog warden shot all 3 of the dogs and told they told the lady she would be put in jail if she had other pitbulls....now the lady is in jail anyway for the dogs killing the old lady. It's not the dogs themself...it's all how they are raised like said previously.

My buddy has 2 pits at his shop....they are the nicest dogs ever they wont hurt you but they will lick you to death and very playful. Now if none of us are in the show room when someone walks in the front door the dogs dont reconize, then they will bark and keep that person at the door untill one of us get's out there then they will relax and lay down. IMO they are good dogs if they are raised properly.

macs03GT 07-13-2006 12:06 PM

yeah it's not the "breed" of dog that makes them aggresive. It's the way they are raised. I can make a daushound mean, just like i can make a lab mean. Pitbulls are great dogs. They just have to be trained properly. I had to get rid of my Doberman becuase of insurance purposes. It sucks because i would put any baby around that dog but because they are on the "aggressive dog list" insurance wouldn't cover us. It's like prejudice against certain dogs if you ask me.

quoted for truth.

There's nothing wrong with the pitbull breed, the problem is with the way some people raise them. Not all pitbulls want to rip your heart out, my friend has 2 of the nicest pitbulls ever and they lay around the house and play all day. They are not aggressive what-so-ever.

It's almost the same as categorizing every single person of arab decent as a terrorist.

Well actually most dog attacks are by certain breeds just the same as most terrorist attacks are by certain people. :) j/k

But its like you said there are great dogs that are pits and rots, but the fact of the matter is there are ALOT more people being mauled by those dogs than Collies and Labs.

I got chased by a pack of Collies and Yorkshire Terriers over the weekend..luckily I tripped over a large stick so I picked it up and beat them within inches of their little lives. Teach those family dogs to run after me.

lol yorkies....

GREG@SN95 07-13-2006 03:29 PM

Like matt said...

pit bulls... like any other dog... are loyal affectionate dogs...

People train them/ abuse them etc...

And whoever said something about outlawing certain breeds of dogs... You truely are a ****in moron...

My brother owns a pitbull and has a 2 year old daughter... She pokes the dog in the eyes, yanks its ears, smacks it with toys and guess what the dog does? licks her face...

Theres is no reason to outlaw a breed of dog... heres a better suggestion...

anyone who mistreats a dog should be put to death...

bull****...

jjtgiants 07-13-2006 03:59 PM

From what I've read, pit bulls are a small population of dogs, however account for a pretty high percentage of dog attacks and have the highest fatal dog attacks...meaning killing a person, which typically is a child under 12. Pit Bulls also have 1,200 pound of force per square inch of crushing power, which is 10 times the crushing power of most big dogs!!!!!! So it doesn't take much for them to really hurt or kill someone.

Anyway, I think Ontorio, Canada banned pit bulls.... Denver, Colorado banned them in 1989 and it was overturned in early 2005 and then reinstituted later in 2005. They actually went into peoples homes, took their pit bull and destroyed them! I think San Francisco has some sort of law, but I don't think it bans them. This was after like 4 people were killed by pit bulls within a month or something like that. Once couple even went to prison because their 2 pit bulls attacked and killed a random lady walking down the street....The dog owners were both lawyers.

One more thing. lots of insurance companies won't give you home owners insurance if you have a pit bull because they are considered a huge liability and dangerous.

I like dogs, but I stay clear of pit bulls and when I have kids I will NEVER EVER allow them around pit bulls.

macs03GT 07-13-2006 06:34 PM

the reason why people make these dogs so vicious is becuase of their power. The dogs can't help their bite power but people know what it is so they make them that way. I'm sure if a collie had the same power as a pit they'd be on the top list of vicious dogs too.

All i'm saying is becuase they are so powerful stupid people are making them vicious. No dog is born vicious. Just like humans...no human is programed to kill people but we have serial killers out there. A dog doesn't kow how to be mean unless you make it like that. It's not becuase of their breed...it's becuase of their power that they can't help that one bit

that's your business but it's kinda like your pre-qualifying this dog. Personally i wouldn't allow my child around a dog that I didnt feel comfortable around. Whether it be a pitbull or a greyhound.

Your right, it is pre-qualifying a dog and I'm just fine with that...no, I don't do that with people, but it's just a dog..ha ha ha....I think you hit the nail on the head about not letting your kids around dogs your not comfy with....but for me it would especially be pits and rots.

Slither 07-14-2006 11:43 AM

Last night at Bed Bath & Beyond when I was working, a lady came in with a seeing eye Rot. This dog was obviously groomed for perfection and to loyally serve its owner. Even with knowing that, and knowing the thing was a calm as a kitten..it still makes you a little uneasy having one walk around in your store. Rots and Pitts are very intimidating looking dogs so I think that has a lot to do with it. It made me a little nervous having it in there even though I knew it wasn't going to rip my name badge off and eat my face for dinner.

mikewstang 07-14-2006 12:07 PM

I have 2 pit bull dogs a male and a female and there the most loyal and loving dogs i have ever had. Pit Bulls werent born to fight, its the dumbass people that raise them that way. They keep them tied up with a heavy ass chain to make them look cool. I think breeders just need to be more carefull to who they sell them to. my dogs had puppies on easter day and i made sure the people i sold them to would had raised them right.

dont tell me these dogs where born to kill

no ****...

thats instinct... take any dog and let em lose within a 1/4mile radius or more from a dead animal and they'll find it...

my dog (a cocker/ bichon frise mix) chases and finds dead animals all the time...

however... dogs are NOT naturaly violent

I really dont think it is that bad either, but I still dont think pit bulls should be around children.
Children are the most frequent victims, accounting for 60 percent of the dog bites and 20 of the 25 dog-bite fatalities in 1996. Dog attacks are now the No. 1 reason that children wind up in hospital emergency rooms. Pit bulls and pit-bull crosses (not always easy to distinguish) have caused more than a third of the nation's dog-bite fatalities since 1979 and a comparable proportion of serious injuries. Not saying they should be banned, I am just saying that if you own one you should be a litte more careful.

ChrisGT 07-15-2006 08:19 AM

It's been my experience that small dogs will bite you faster and more often than large dogs. The thing is if a small dog bites you you just knock it outta your way but when a large dog bites you it does damage.

I was bitten by a Rott once, had to go to the hospital and have stitches to close the wound. I don't see it as the dogs fault, rather the owner who taught him. Think of all the kids who grow up watching their parents sell drugs and gangbang. What do most of them grow up to be? Gangbangers!
It's the same with dogs, they react to situations the way they were taught to act.

Though with that said, if a dog attacks a human they should be put down. Reguardless of breed.
